Sorry but I need to cancel my previous booking as I thought it was a coach trip, not car sharing.

Description:
We are organising a group visit to the National Space Centre in Leicester on Saturday 22 June 2019.  If we can get 15 people (or more) attending we have an entrance fee of only £11.50, instead of the usual £15 (or £12 for concessions) + a planetarium show.  Furthermore, the society has decided to offer a further £5 discount for every WAS member who wants to attend.  This means the total cost to each WAS member will be between £10 and £6.50.
You can find more about the excellent National Space Centre at https://spacecentre.co.uk/
We are not planning to have a coach, instead we will organise car sharing nearer the time.  Travel time from Worcester would normally be around 1.5 hours (just under 80 miles).
To secure a space (no pun intended) we need £5 cash deposit paid to us not later than our next main meeting on Thursday 14th March.

That sounds great. Please could you reserve 2 places for me (member + non member). I would prefer to drive rather than be driven and  would be able to provide a lift for a further 2-3 people. I will pay the deposit at the next meeting.

Jonathan.

Okay, we now enough people to get the group discount, so I've now paid the deposit.  Any further bookings can be on an 'as and when' basis, although we should give them firm final numbers before the end of May.  All we are asking for is a £5 deposit.    Guests will be eligible for the group discount of £3.50 each, but not the additional WAS member's subsidy of £5 each.  Therefore, the balance will be £1.50 for WAS members and £6.50 for guests.  We'll sort out collecting this balance nearer the time.

We'll look to sort out lift shares in April/May.  Thanks everyone for your quick replies. :-)

Just a quick reminder of this event just outside Cheltenham on 23rd March. It's a great day out with loads of talks on observing and imaging deep sky objects. As WAS is an affiliate member of the BAA you can get tickets for just £7.50, which includes a buffet lunch.
You can book online on the BAA website at www.britastro.org .  Space is limited, so book early.  See you there.

Hello , Michael, Have you got a spare seat left in your car for the practical astronomy show? Just don't want to spend money on Astro kit when I just have !. Just come in briefly during during an Astro imaging run. A rare clear dark night.

Never mind if you haven't got room, this is rather last-minute as we are flying on Monday to Los Angeles and in final preparations.

Has anyone got a Windows XP computer I could use/borrow?

Michael Morris

I've just picked up an old Philips Toucam Pro webcam which I'd like to be able to use on a Windows 7 computer I have in the observatory.  The problem is that the otherwise excellent Toucam Pro is not compatible with anything later than Windows XP.  There is a technique of flashing the firmware on the camera to think it is the later SPC900NC model, making compatible with later versions of Windows. The problem is that you need to perform this firmware upgrade from a Windows XP machine.  It involves installing a piece of software called WcRmac and the Toucam pro and SPC900 drivers on the XP machine.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Have you got Win7 Pro. If so, there is a WinXP mode built in. It might be worth a try. If not, I have an XP Pro machine and am willing to give your exercise a whirl but please virus check any s/w before handing it over. Tony D.

Re: Has anyone got a Windows XP computer I could use/borrow?

Hello Tony, I was with Mike who kindly gave me a lift to the practical astronomy show at Kettering on Saturday , a really good show, all free,  great talks in the afternoon narrowband filters solar imaging , optimum signal to noise subframe and number of frames at different light pollution levels, against detector thermal and read out noise sources in dark sky imaging, and high resolution optimal planets imaging.

I have just emailed him. I have available, a Windows XP laptop, only occasionally used for imaging in the Observatory. Once I get back after March 18. So now he has a choice.

We leave Los Angeles Monday early-morning soon.

FW: Chasing Darkness

Subject: Chasing Darkness

Dear all,

We are holding a Dark Skies event on Saturday 16th March at Guiting Power which may be of interest to the Astronomy Society/Club. Is there a way it could be flagged up and/or circulated around? Attached is a poster that can be used or if just text is needed – see below.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Dark skies are recognisably important as part of our heritage, for wildlife, and for health and wellbeing. They are a notable and characteristic feature of the Cotswolds AONB and in 2016, CPRE published survey data showing that a good part of the Cotswolds AONB retains high quality dark skies – but also warns that dark skies are becoming increasingly rare. We need to protect the astronomical landscape as much as the landscape underfoot.

The Cotswolds Conservation Board is launching the Cotswolds Dark Skies Initiative on the evening of 16th March at Guiting Power Village Hall. Astronomy Journalist, author, and science presenter Will Gater will be talking about what dark skies mean to us, what they can reveal, and how we must work to protect their treasures. Weather permitting, the evening will conclude with an outdoor stargazing session.

Tickets are £8.00 for adults, 16 and under free and are available from: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/chasing-darkness-an-evening-with-will-gater-tickets-56785907177

Many thanks,

Mark
