Re. The trip to the Space Centre

Tony Dean

Hi, folks...

I was sorry to hear of Mike's (or his daughter's) health problems. Let's hope they're both back in circulation as soon as possible.

Jonathan Fligelstone kindly offered to give a lift to the Space Centre (and hopefully a lift back!), but I'm willing to give up my seat for any of the people left without a lift. Given my ability to shuffle the 100 metres in 15 minutes flat, I would be playing catch up most of the time. If any one of the three members still needing a lift wishes to avail themselves of the offer then please keep me, Jonathan & Rod Stewart posted.

Hello Mike,

I'm able to give a lift to 3 people.  Get back to me as soon as possible if they want to come along in my car.

Best wishes,

Alamgir.

Hi Alamgir
That's brilliant, thanks. Probably the easiest way to organise this is if you send me your telephone number and I give it to Chris and Ruth and ask them to ring you to make arrangements. Is that okay?

Best wishes

Michael

Hi Tony
We now have lifts sorted for Ruth, Chris and Susy,  but thanks for your very selfless offer.

Visit to Space Centre -final update

Michael Morris

Trip to National Space Centre, Leicester on Saturday 22 June 2019.

Address: National Space Centre, Exploration Drive, Leicester, LE4 5NS

Tel: 0116 261 0261

https://spacecentre.co.uk/

Travel

The quickest and easiest route from Worcester on a Saturday morning should be M5  >  M42  > M6 Southbound > M69 to Leicester.  Travel time by car is estimated to be around 1 hour 30 minutes.

The National Space Centre is located just off the A6, two miles north of Leicester City Centre, midway between Leicester’s inner and outer ring roads. Brown road signs with a distinctive rocket logo will direct you from the arterial routes around Leicester.

The centre has over 400 parking spaces in their car park, including 23 enhanced accessibility spaces, charged at £3 pay and display for the whole day.

Our aim is to meet IN RECEPTION (not outside reception as originally planned) to the Space Centre at 10:00 am, so we recommend you aim to leave Worcester no later than 08:15 am.

Unfortunately, I am not going to be able to attend due to illness, so our treasurer, Rod Stewart, has very kindly offered to liaise with the centre on the day (Thanks Rod, you are a hero!).  If you are delayed and are going to arrive significantly later than 10:00 am you may need to book in at reception yourself.    If this is the case, please give me a ring on 07446 222545 and I will let Rod know.  If you have to book yourself in at reception know, please let them know your name and that you are part of the WAS group booking.

Please pay your outstanding balance to Rod on the day.

·         Members who have already paid a £5 deposit, balance due = £1

·         Guests who have already paid a £5 deposit, balance due = £6

·         Members who have not yet paid deposit, balance due = £6

Rod has details of who has already paid a deposit.

Lift sharing

It would be appreciated if those being given a lift to the Space Centre were to offer the driver a contribution towards fuel costs (Typical fuel cost for this 154 mile round trip would be about £18-£20.  So, for a car for 4 people this would equate to about £4.50 - £5 a head).

Itinery

We will be meet in reception at 10:00 am.  Your admission will include a free Night Sky Tour planetarium show at 11:50, finishing at 12:20.  I suggest that we  meet up at the ‘Booster Café’ on the site for lunch at 12:30.  We will nominally plan to leave at 3:00 pm.

Have a great day

Michael Morris

Hi All

We were expecting guests this weekend that prevented me from joining the group to the Space Centre. Unfortunately they have postponed that now frees up my weekend. I will be travelling from Bredenbury, near Bromyard and will have a space in my van if anyone needs a lift. If you do please call me on my mobile 0750 222 0844 to make arrangements.

Mike/Rod

I appreciate this is really late notice and if it causes a problem please do not hesitate to let me know.

Best regards

Mark

It would be great if people could take photos of the visit to the space centre tomorrow so that we can use them on our website. A group photo would be good as well.
Have a great day.

We are again planning to participate in the Science in the Park event at Priory Park in Malvern.  We will have two solar telescopes and some display materials.  Help with setting up and breaking down and with manning the stall would be a huge help.

I will be there and will help as much as I can, but also helping at the IOP stand, but with continuing back problems, I can only stand or sit for short periods.

Photos from our society trip to the National Space Centre in Leicester on 22nd June 2019

Re: Science in the Park - Saturday 29th June

Michael Morris

Hi Everyone

Hot on the heels of last Saturday's visit to the National Space Centre, this Saturday (29th June) we are again participating in the annual 'Science in the Park' festival of science in Priory Park in Malvern (at the back of the Malvern Theatre Complex).  As in previous years will have a stand where (fingers crossed) the main attraction will be solar observing.  The weather forecast looks okay for the day.

For the last two years we have been very busy on the stand, with members each bringing along their own soar observing equipment.  This has left as equipment-rich, but personnel poor.  Each telescope must be manned at all times, so as a result we haven’t really had people available to actually talk members of the public.  So this year we are asking members NOT to bring along solar observing equipment, but instead to help with setting up (starts at 9:00 AM ish) and breaking down and with manning the stall.  Chris Livingstone will be bringing along a white light telescope and a Hydrogen Alpha telescope and the society’s Solar viewer.

Unfortunately, I’m still a bit crock and won’t be able to help out on the day L

These events are an important part of our remit, to educate and enthuse the public and to let them know about the society.  Please can anyone who can help out contact Chris on 01905 821103 so that we can make sure we have enough people to help promote astronomy and WAS at this important event.

Thanks

Michael Morris

The weather forecast for Saturday is for a really lovely day, so we expect that that stall will be very busy. Please help if you can. I'm recovering after a stint in hospital, so I won't be able to help out.
Also, please remember to bring a sunhat and some sun tan lotion as it is forecast to be sunny and hot all day.

Photoshop CS5 disk?

Michael Morris

Unfortunately the main computer in my observatory has gone bang and I had to replace it. :-(
I'm slowly going through the long-winded and tedious task of re-installing all the software that was on my old machine.  However, I can't for the life of me find the installation disk for my copy of Photoshop CS5.
Did I lend it to anyone in the society?
