Re: Help for a beginner

Alan Scriven

Hi Malcolm,

My name is Alan Scriven and I am vice chairman of Worcester Astronomical Society.

I don't know if anybody else has been in touch, but just in case, I am able to offer a little assistance with finding your way around the night sky, I'm by no means an expert though but I can point you in the direction of a few interesting sights if ever we see any clear skies anytime soon!!

Unfortunately I am going away for a few days this weekend (I believe the weather will be pretty awful anyway!!)
but if you reply to this entry, I'll be in touch next week if you wish.

It's good to see you have a telescope already; have you had any joy setting it up yet?

Anyway, as I said, I'll look out for a response to this and be in touch if no-one else beats me to it.

Regards,

Alan Scriven

Message from Chris: It will be partly clear tonight, but with a full moon.

So if anybody wants to view this evening can you ring Chris and he will go to Crown East and open up.

Help for a beginner

Malcolm Colmer

Having been given a 6" Newtonian telescope for my 70th birthday earlier this year I am trying to get to grips with observations. I am struggling with finding my way around the sky and reading charts. Is there anyone who would be willing to give some of their time helping me, please? I live in Pershore.

Malcolm Colmer

8:30 to 10:00 - CROWN EAST SCOUT HUT

Comet Catalina is due to become visible in northern skies at the beginning of the new year and speed through Ursa Major and through into the edge of Cassiopeia before February is out. With this in mind, this month's Practical Astronomer talk is about Observing and Imaging Comets

NEW MEMBER WELCOME PACKS?

Michael Morris

Dear All

At Thursday's AGM John put forward a very valid point about quite a few new members leaving after attending just a few meetings.  Speaking to other societies, I gather this is not an uncommon pattern.

One of the excellent suggestions put forward for addressing this issue is the production of  a 'Welcome Pack' for new members.  In the past we have had a rather sporadic approach to giving out stuff to new members and with the new website bringing in an increasing number of new members this discussion is perhaps rather timely.

Personally, as I see it there are two not necessarily mutually-exclusive ways of approaching this.  The production of a physical 'Welcome Pack' and/or an improvement in the resources in the 'Files' and 'Links' sections of this newsgroup.

So this is where you guys and gals come in!

  • What would you like to see in a welcome pack?
(Please bear in mind that anything going in the pack will have to be funded
    entirely out of society funds)
  • What extra things for new members would you
like to see in the Newsgroup?

Thanks

New member welcome packs?

Michael Morris

At last Thursday's AGM John's comments about us losing some new members quite quickly after joining is a very valid point and I gather is a common problem with many societies.

One of several excellent suggestions put forward was that we have a Welcome Pack for new members. This is something the committee have considered in the past, but it's never really got off the ground in any systematic way.  In light of the comments expressed at the AGM I think it is time we looked at this again.  I think in the past we have had a rather ad hoc approach, and perhaps it may work better if we try to get a simple CHEAP pack together that is easy to assemble and maintain.

To me there are two ways we can do this that are not necessarily mutually exclusive - a physical Welcome Pack and enhanced 'files' and 'links' section in this newsgroup.

So this is were you guys and gals come in!

What do you think we should include in a welcome pack? (please bear in mind this has to come out of society funds!)

What extras things would you like to see for new members in the Newsgroup?

Thanks

29th October - observing session cancelled

Michael Morris

I'm afraid we have yet again been beaten by the weather.  Cloud and a forecast of more rain mean tonight's observing session is cancelled.

CANCELLED-OBSERVING EVENING 22 OCTOBER

Michael Morris

Unfortunately the clouds have again defeated us and we have had to cancelled tonight's planned observing evening.  October has five Thursday's in it, so we'll have another stab at an observing evening next week (29 October).

FOR SALE - artifical star

Michael Morris

This isn't some fiendish plot to sell off secret nuclear fusion technology. I'm selling a small artificial star used for testing and collimating optics.  I demonstrated it's use at a talk on telescope collimation given a few months ago.  It's very simple and is made by a company with the rather grand title of Hubble Optics.

Artificial Star

I'm asking just £12 for it.

Yahoo newsgroup access via website

Michael Morris

We've changed the way you can access the society's members only yahoo newsgroup from our website.  There is no longer a link on the home page, instead you can access the newsgroup from links in our 'meetings and venues' and 'membership' webpages.  There is also a separate webpage about the newsgroup at WORCESTER ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY

This includes a link to instruction about how to join the newsgroup.

You can join the society/renew your membership online

Michael Morris

We've just made it easier for you to join the society or renew your membership.  We have added the ability to pay us online. Just fill in the application form on the membership page on our website ( www.worcesterastro.co.uk ) and we'll send you an invoice to pay for your membership with PayPal.  You will need to have a PayPal account to join on line.

Sorry about that. It's the automated system used by Yahoo that seems to randomly add one hour to the times. The start time is 8:00pm
