Tie-up for 6-shaft counterbalance loom

Stacey Harvey-Brown

Can anyone point me to a good source for information about tieing up a 6-shaft counterbalance loom please?
I have been researching but with very limited success.
Thanks so much,
Warmest wishes from a very warm SW France

Laila Lundell's The Big Book of Weaving, pg. 218-19 has 2 diagrams, one of them for lace weaves, and one where the shafts have approximately the same number of heddles.  Perhaps this will help?

Detailed upper tie-up examples for CB looms are given in Väv issue #3 (2021) with awesome diagrams of setups using multiple pulleys; horses; and dräll pulleys. It’s a treasure trove for 3 to 10 shafts and includes several for six.

Stacey,

John Tovey's The Technique of Weaving has extensive information about various counterbalance mountings.

The Big Book of Weaving (Laila Lundell) and The Swedish Weaving Book (Eriksson, Gustavsson, Lovallius) both show a 6-shaft mounting.

And if the tie-up is a mirror image, you can use damask pulleys.

Thanks everyone so much for your recommendations.

Amy, I have now ordered this issue on back-order. Thank you for your suggestion.

Thanks Toni for the Tovey suggestion - I have his book too but he doesn't talk about 6-shafts although there is some useful suggestions for 8-shaft counterbalance tie-ups with pulleys and horses.

And thanks to Nancy, Toni and Sara for your suggestion of the Big Book of Weaving. I had never explored this in detail before but it is really interesting to discover the many ways of hanging up to 10 shafts on a counterbalance. What a useful resource!

I love how much there always is still to learn in our wonderful world of weaving!
Thanks again for all your advice and help.
Warmest wishes,

Hi, Stacey,

I was browsing books yesterday and found this small drawing of cb mountings. The source is Jämtlands- och Härjedalsvävar, Alexander Berger, 1928.
