The Weaver's Journal Vol X #4 Issue 40 Spring 1986

Gay McGeary

I am researching spot draft which were woven with 5 shafts. I requested a copy of the Weaver's Journal Vol X #4 from my local guild. They mailed me the magazine. My local post office accidentally placed it in a bin with water. It arrive soaking wet. I place paper towel between each page, but it is not in original shape. Does any one know where I can purchase the Spring 1986 copy of the Weaver's Journal? I feel badly that about the soaking wet copy.

Hi Gay,

I have that issue in my collection.  I’d be happy to send it to you and you can copy it and eventually return it.  At worst case, you can return that photocopy to your Guild Library so a facsimile of the issue is back in the collection.  Shame on the Post Office.  Please let me know if this is of interest to you.

Regards,

Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Thank you for the offer. However, thanks to my husband’s suggestion to use paper towels, the journal is still readable. I can also get a digital copy at Arizona.edu. The article, right after the “Shaker Towels” article, is entitled “Hemstitched Edgings for Linens” and I wanted to take picture of the diagrams, which are not clear in the online version.

I feel badly that I will be returning a damaged copy to the library and want to replace it if I can. I checked a copy of books online sites, but have been unsuccessful

Hi Gay,
I was going to suggest the Post Office replace the damaged issue but we all know what a black hole that would become.

I paged through that issue and noticed the article you mentioned.  I’ll scan it for you and send it over.  At least you’ll have multiple sources from which to choose the best.

I appreciate the reply.

HI Gay….you can download that Journal from the Arizona.edu site that was run by Ralph Griswold.  Go to https://www2.cs.arizona.edu/patterns/weaving/wj.html    There are a lot of issues of Weaver’s Journal magazine there.  Once downloaded perhaps you can print out a copy and return that with the damaged copy to your local guild.  At least that way they still have a copy of the magazine for members to check out.

Hi Gay and everyone looking for documents at Ralph Griswold’s Digital Archive.

Yes, the archive is still housed on AZ U’s CS system. However, it is easier to access the archive via handweaving net as Kris provides a search function not at the archive itself:

    Hi Marg,

Thank you for the link to handweaving.net. While the arizonia.edu site does have the weaver journal with the Shaker Towel article, the diagram for hemstitching in the following article is not clear, which is why request the journal from my guild’s library. Luckily, after placing paper towels between each page, the journal is readable. However, the pages are a little crinkly.

The arizonia.edu site does not go back to the beginning of the publishing of the journal. I found an article in volume III about two ties weaves which describing many of the threading systems I have found in star work coverlets. However, the handweaving.net site goes back to the first issue of the Weavers Journal. Together the two sites are good sources for the Weavers Journal.

I read the Journal from the link to the archives, it is quite legible
but the illustrations for the hemstitching are still grainy. I have a
copy of the Encyclopedia of Needlework, and if anyone is interested, I
can try to copy directly from the book. It is small, the print is
tiny. Interestingly, it does not have directions for Italian
hemstich, which I use and think is both more attractive and more
    secure than common hemstich.

Gay, you could check with Eugene Textile Center.  They periodically (groan) have back issues of WJ available, and they don't list them on their website.  Email or a phone call are your best bets!

    Good luck with your quest!

    Hi Gay

To clarify, there is only one site — Ralph’s archive — and it is at the UofAZ. Handweaving net offers a portal into that archive, but does not have a document archive itself. Rather HW net stores WIF files, and wonderful functions.

It’s a mystery that documents wouldn’t appear in both searches. Can you give us a link to the documents you found via HW net that you couldn’t find at the archive?

    Thanks

Hi Gay and everyone looking for documents at Ralph Griswold’s Digital Archive.

Yes, the archive is still housed on AZ U’s CS system. However, it is easier to access the archive via handweaving net as Kris provides a search function not at the archive itself:

    I see wj01.pdf through 46. (file wj_77_04.pdf is a duplicate of wj_04.pdf)

    I don’t think you’re doing anything wrongly.

Obviously the search function from each of the locations is lacking; one shows a list of 16 early versions, the next shows a list of 16 later versions. Neither are complete.

I agree with Mark, go to the direct link “pattern” folder. Unfortunately the full title of the periodical is missing. It’s a bit of a guessing game.

As all of this was such a huge, volunteer, undertaking, I doubt anyone is eager to fix the search issues.
