Hi Louise
I have been watching the news here in Milwaukee, for the last few days, I know you live in northern California. Louise, do you live in the area of California that is under so many feet of snow? If yes, I hope you are safe. I hope you don't mind me asking.

Yes we have had snow here in Central Mendocino County off and mostly on for over a week...most unusual for our Mediterranean climate. This area has electrical power and there have been breaks in the snow and black ice for safe trips to the grocery store to restock. However, about a half hours drive north of here, the situation is much different. People have been without power and snowbound in their homes. Taking this opportunity to weave with silk and really enjoy the smooth, light reflective surfaces...so different from the rag rugs of the previous projects. Thanks for the info on this great article, Penny and Louise! String was definitely the seed of the textile world. Even today, the importance of fiber and yarn quality is unknown to anyone outside of the textile production profession.
My favorite telling of string history, and it’s relation to fashion history, is in Elizabeth Wayland Barber’s book Women’s Work: The First 20,000 Years, Chapter 2, The String Revolution. Can’t recommend this book enough if you haven’t met it yet: https://wwnorton.com/books/9780393313482
