Anyone familiar with Meta looms (in Belgium)?
Michelle Robertson
Hi all, I've been on the hunt for an 8-shaft table loom that I can take to workshops, and Meta's 40cm 8/12 shaft Sample Loom has caught my eye. I've contacted them and learned that they do not ship to the US, unfortunately. However, I have friends in Germany and will be in the area (or at least, on the correct side of the Atlantic) this coming summer. So I'm pondering whether I could actually stop by their shop and check out this loom. I really like how well it folds down, while also having a sliding beater on rails; I can't think of any other table looms with this feature. Does anyone know anything about these looms? If so, what would you say are their pros and cons, and are they sturdy? I'd appreciate any observations that might help me figure out if it's worth making this loom maker part of my vacation plans! Link to details about their 8-shaft sample loom: http://www.weavingloomsmeta.be/loom/sample_loom.php Thanks! Michelle (in Maryland, USA) |

I did stumble on their site recently - the loom does look well built - if
you have the opportunity for someone to bring it along in their luggage, I would consider trying it out. Sara von Tresckow, Fond du Lac, WI sarav@... http://www.weavingloomsmeta.be/loom/sample_loom.php http://www.weavingloomsmeta.be/loom/sample_loom_photos.php for now six or seven years, and I'm very happy with it. I also bought the floor stand, so as not to have it take up a whole table, and although it is a sturdy loom, with felt pads under the stand it can be shifted around easily. From the photos in their website I can see there have been some improvements since I bought mine, which haswood ratchet wheels, as in the first photo, while now they mention metal ratchet wheels. Also the folding mechanism appears to have been improved. I like the space between the front beam and the castle, giving a good shed and the clever way the shafts can be dislodged to add or remove heddles quickly and easily. I do both back-to-front and front-to-back warping, depending on my project, and I find both easy and comfortable. The sliding beater works well, the rods need to be oiled every now and then, which I guess is normal. At the time I bought it its price was definitely competitive and I think it's still very good value. I'm not a professional weaver, but I do plenty of projects. My main loom is the Louet David. The Meta is in my holiday home, where besides short visits duting the year I spend nearly two months in the summer and then it's in daily use, and not just for sampling.
