AVL shaft randomly dropping

For no apparent reason my number 7 shaft is dropping randomly. I am using 8 shafts currently and wove about 14 inches correctly before this started. Any suggestions to resolve are welcome.

I have the same thing on #3 and typically when I’m chugging along. I think sometimes the heddles at the end of the shaft get tangled and it pops it out of the eyelet.

Hey i have alot of experience if it is a mechanical dobby. The biggest thing is to make sure the dobby arm is aligned properly so the dobby cables are right in the middle of the slots on the dobby arm. Secondly make sure the roller that holds your peg plan is properly adjusted so when your peg plan is attached the keys make contact with the dobby cables and can push them back far enough so they can be caught by the dobby arm. I’m using an old Compu Dobby I and recently had the same issue. In my case it was shaft 8. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t rise when called for, sometimes it rose then fell. It usually worked for a while when I started up the dobby, then got worse after 30-60 minutes of weaving, My spouse is a retired IT person and services my dobby. He found that the solenoid for that shaft was sticking. The probe that pushes the cable to the sweep arm was neither going out far enough to push the knob in place properly nor retracting fully when the shaft was down. A thorough cleaning and lubrication of the dobby has solved the problem so far. If you lubricate it use graphite not any sort of oil. Hope this helps. Sheila Sheila Carey Courtenay, BC sheila@... Since I started tying together the unused heddles on each shaft my AVL Compu-Dobby Loom, I have many fewer problems with shafts and heddles misbehaving.

I have the opposite problem, the shaft does not drop after being used. I have a 24 shaft workshop dory loom. I talked/zoomed with AVL and have not found a solution. They think that one or more of the wires may be bent and they are sending me new ones to try. We can see that not all the wires are in the same place in the dobby.. We’ll see.

I assume you are using a CD. Watch the startup, when it lifts all of the shafts, one at a time, for anything unusual, or any unusual sounds. You may have a bad solenoid. I keep spare solenoids for both of mine. Look at #7, see if it I is different in any way. Look to see if the ball is worn or misshapen. If you have the swinging arm, look to see that the slots that catch the ball are not worn. I did not realize how worn mine were until I replaced it. Good luck. You can rethread 7 to another shaft and rewrite your pattern. Done that too. Sandra |

How convenient that you have a qualified tech at hand! Can you tell us where/how to lubricate the dobby. I have the tri-flow type of lubricant. I am working on a Treadle the Threading activity, and often my #24 lifts, particularly when just starting a session, but occasionally otherwise. Also I had my #8 drop suddenly, which was a little scary. Additionally, my fan is making a higher pitch whirring sound when first turned on, but it will settle to the normal sound after several seconds. That suggests to me I need a cleaning, hopefully not worse. Any comments on this? |

I am having trouble with 24 lifting when it shouldn't. I am weaving summer and winter, which is a 4 pick sequence. It goes 1,2; patt; 3-24; patt. Occasionally, 24 isn't cleared, and rises on the second patt Lift. This because the cable has stretched, and the turnbuckle is maxed out. A new cable is one solution. Sandra |
