Shaaraf looms -- new manufacturer?

Michelle Robertson

Hi all,

I'm on a search for a dobby loom that fits in my limited available space.  In searching for options, I came across a newer loom maker that I have not heard of before.  I know that dobbies can be finicky so I'm not sure I'd want to buy a recent model, much less from a new manufacturer, but this particular one is still interesting to me since it has a folding back beam.  They also have multishaft table looms.  Does anyone here -- especially any non-US weavers -- have any sort of loom from this company?  Or has anyone seen or used one?

Here's a link to their dobby loom page:  https://shaaraf.com/en/product/dobby-loom/

My curiosity is mainly academic at this point, but it's still exciting to see new companies getting into loom manufacturing!

Someone posted on the Weavetech Facebook page about a computer dobby loom they had bought from this manufacturer. They were having difficulty getting it to work, and had received poor technical support from the company. It sounds like a more experience is needed, but I agree that it’s exciting to see new companies.

There has been a lot of buzz about these looms lately. The designer and owner of the company, Dr. Osama Shaaraf, is an engineer and passionate weaver with lots of innovative ideas: his looms have some very interesting design features. He has been in business for some time now. I have never seen one of his looms in real life but have corresponded with Dr. Shaaraf about a variety of topics, mostly to do with double-harness weaving. He is very responsive and would welcome an enquiry from you, I am sure. He might be able to point you in the direction of ’satisfied customers’ you can chat with.

Thanks, both of you!  I should add that I'm actually in the US; I am just assuming that they're more likely to be adopted on the far side of the Atlantic first.  :)

Also, I did not realize there was a Facebook group for Weavetech!  I'll get myself signed up over there, too.

You may want to look at Seguin.  AVL also makes some smaller Dobby looms, although t hey are electronic not mechanical.
