Anastasia Azure also dyed monofilament for her 3-D works.
I attended her talk at Convergence RI, and remember her commenting about the colorfastness - that some of the colors were fading. She didn't get into details, and she may have been referring to her earliest work at that point. |

It’s polyamide (nylon). I buy 720s from a specialist supplier in the U.K. (who sell it for sewing). It’s v cheap but only comes in transparent or smoky. There are a lot of weavers using it in the U.K. and Europe . (For example, - Fishing line would be a reasonable source though if you can find good quality line. Sue |

Monofilament is available in a wide variety of sizes...my friend is using hair sized. I used light weight (10-20 pound test weight). When I dyed mine, I used about two tablespoons of dye (two tablespoons of dry dye powder in 2 cups of water) and about 1/2
cup acidic acid and 2 gallons of water for the equivalent of about 450-500 yards of 10/2 cotton. What I can't remember is how dark the result was.

What is the monofilament you are using? The only monofilament I'm familiar with is fishing line and that doesn't sound like what you are talking about. I've always thought that was a plastic of some sort. Pat Brown

My experience with dyeing monofilament worked well with acetic acid--the same as I used for wool and silk. The dyeing went well....my dealing with the monofilament was a test of my patience. I'd suggest sort of loose figure-eight ties more often than my one-yard
ties. I don't know if there is a way to deal with the twisty nature of the monofilament, but that was the source of most of my problems.

HI Sue…if your monofilament is made of nylon you can dye it with acid dyes. I have heard it is better to use citric acid crystals instead of vinegar to get good results. You can also dye it with all purpose dyes like Rit. Food coloring and kool-aid will dye it as well, but best results are likely from using real dyes. There are instructions for dyeing nylon on the Pro Chemical and Dye web site.

If the monofilament is nylon, you can use acid dyes. I prefer citrus acid crystals or acetic acid over vinegar.
