AVL/Fiberworks interface question
Linda Schultz
I run a WDL with CD 4.5 (CD 4 built after 2017) using High Sierra and Fiberworks Silver Plus 1.3.0. It uses a USB printer cord, not a serial cord. I don't remember if I had to do anything special with my USB port to talk to the loom. These are the instructions Bob Keates sent me. It sounds like you will need to update your version of Fiberworks.
"For Compu-Dobby IV manufactured mid 2017 or later (AVL refers to this as Compu-Dobby 4.5) you need Fiberworks version 1.2.4 or later (identified by -X- in the program ID), or the current version 1.3.0 (-Z-). Your existing version 1.2.1 with -V- in the program ID works with older Compu-Dobby IV, but won't advance the pattern for Compu-Dobby 4.5. You should not need to install drivers for the USB connection. You will need to identify the port in case there is conflict with other devices. The procedure is described in the manual, however we changed the sequence of steps between your version 1.2.1 and the current version 1.3.0, so you need to work from the manual that corresponds to the version you are using." I use Weavepoint on my Toika dobby and take advantage of the Save feature on
the weaving screen, close it, and when the weaving file is reopened, "Resume" and it starts where I left off on that project. I have never tried running two looms simultaneously, but do switch between design files now and then and closing the file with the last position saved seems to take me back to that point when I Resume weaving. I have never seen a CD described as being for a Mac or PC. You adapt your machine with software to the CD, not the other way. CD IV comes with a USB port, so you don't need the serial to USB cable. Sandra |

I thought I could use one laptop to run both AVLs when I got the second. As you said, I can't use both at once. If you are using fairly simple patterns, and keep track manually of where you stopped, yes. I wanted to run echo patterns with long, complex treadlings on both, and found that Weavepoint would only keep my place in one pattern at a time. Fiberworks may be able to hold your progress in two patterns, switching back and forth, but Weavepoint can't. Fortunately (or not, depending on how you see it) the fact that my working laptop had no e or w finally became intolerable, and it was demoted to running the new loom. Sandra |

The AVL CD has had no problems with High Sierra. It's the Big Sur OS that caused problems with adapter cables, not just those for weaving.

HI Martha, Congrats on the loom. Would suggest you get the serial number of the CD IV and check with AVL to make sure that it will talk to aMac . I am under the impression that the CD is specific to either but not both operating systems. There is probably a workaround but I will defer to others for that topic. Since you are using Fiberworks, you could also ask Keats your question. He has bailed me out more than once. Also, I really like the CD IV. I have had experience with all four versions and IV is really good.

I use a PC with Windows 7 to run an A-Series AVL with 40shafts and CompuDobby 3 and a WDL with 24 shafts and CompuDobby 3. I’ve had no problems—just need to remember to tell the computer which loom (number of shafts) I am using.

I am buying a used AVL Workshop Dobby Loom with a CD4. It comes with the Serial to USB connection cord. Will I be able to use the same iMac to run this loom? Is anyone else using one computer to run two looms (not at the same time of course...there is only one of me. ha!) Any advice?? TIA |
