Thank you all.  This has been very informative.  I’m going to try the turmeric. Jennifer

Friend from my childhood played piano always and all days. Then she moved on to sewing and smocking for children and gardening. She takes 1000mg capsule of tumeric and black pepper daily  She still has gnarled hands I would expect of a blacksmith who worked that hard with their  hands, but they function pain free.  She is off all the arthritic meds. Now she is knitting on Grannie.

I hope we are all able to keep on in comfort.

I suspect we are getting older, and suffering from having used our
hands a lot. I hear the same complaints from friends who are
woodworkers and build bamboo fly rods.

Laurie is my guild friend and we have the same problem with our hands.  I have been to an orthopedic doctor and have had cortisone shots in the base of my thumb for this issue.  I also have the Comfort Cool glove that restricts the movement of my thumb from the same doctor. Sometimes the cortisone shot is less effective and I will use the glove and sometimes I use Salonpas on the joint. According to my doctor is there is a standard surgery for this condition but she said it is very painful and with a long recovery.  She says often the joint will sort of lock up and stop hurting.

Are we all just getting older or are just we wearing out from all this weaving?

I, too, suffer from hand problems. I have gotten great relief from the pain and some relief from knuckle swelling by using turmeric.  Apply the oil to the joints or ingest the capsules.  Hasn't helped the grip, but just being pain-free is a blessing!

I had hand problems a few years ago, and was able to get a referral to Physical Therapy. They gave me two grades of hand putty that you can use to exercise your hand.  You just squeeze it in different ways. It really worked for me. They also gave me three pages of pictures showing the various exercises. In my experience, PT always works wonders.

Laurie:  Just another feel good hand thing,  try hot wax treatments...I think Bed Bath & Beyond type places have them.  Years ago my MIL swore by them, I tried them and they seem to help.

Hi Laurie

In reading your post, you have arthritis in your hands, you are losing grip strength. The question, I have, is there a kind of therapy, that will stop the loss of more hand strength? Or might, rebuild some hand strength lost? If me I would need professional answers. I am not willing to give up one tiny speck of my quality of life.
