Multi yarns used as one
Vera Totos
You can use a doubling stand, something like this:
The idea is that the thread on the bottom goes through the center of the top cone, and as they unwind together, the top thread twists around the thread in the center, keeping the two from separating while winding or weaving.

A doubling stand will tend to wind the yarns at an uneven tension and mess with you. The trick is to apply a lot of tension when winding on. Thread them thru your fingers for the tension. Also if you have EFS and pirn, this will actually twist the threads as they feed off the pirn which is a good thing

In addition to Liz's suggestion, keep your hand very close to the bobbin,
quill or pirn so the threads cannot separate on the way to winding on.

Well Penny, I happen to own a yarn twister from Venne-Colcoton Unikat. A maximum of 9 cones fit in the device. For Stubenitsky Code I used three cones of 20/2 mercerized cotton for warps and wefts. The ‘singles’ loosely ply together.

Hi Everyone
I buy most of my threads on 3–4-pound cones they are too big around to fit on a doubling stand I use the plastic milk crates upside down they fit together when I stack them more then 2-3 high are nice and stable.

Denise, you could try Lone Star Loom
Room, as she sells the Venne yarn.
I must add a note! The device can only be used with the grey Venne cones.

Oh darn, I was hoping to use it for my stock of 140/2 silk. I’m wanting to use them tripled in a warp.

Yes, all the suggestions are good and I add a damp microfiber cloth wrapped around the exit of the stand with the doubled yarns, and another damp microfiber in my hand as I guide the threads onto the pirn. Helps the threads stick together AND protects my hand from cuts and burns. And yes, mixing shades makes for lovely depth of color. Treadle with Joy, Kati

The Leclerc doubling stand says it is actually for 3 strands of yarn because one cone can go on the floor if it is mounted on the wall.

I haven't seen any mention of using a spinning wheel to ply the yarns together, but I might have missed it. I use an electric spinning wheel to ply multi strands together for a big project but for the sample where I want to try this and that, I use the cones on top of each other as described. The electric spinning wheel is fast and I can control the tension thru my hand grip. Just a word of warning though. Once, I plied two silk yarns together, gobs of it, and then I discovered that they had different shrinkage rates when I dyed them! I had gobs of unusable yarn!

Sandy, be aware of the fact that you
have to use the grey cones of Venne! I use to spool yarns from
different cones on empty Venne cones.
