Re: Macomber Loom hook question

Nann Miller

The Super hooks are well worth the cost. One must monitor them as they tend to spread at the hook end occasionally—so you just pinch them together a bit.  You may want to make certain you have a metal lam depressed (as opposed to a dowel at the end of a cord).   When you order the hooks, give your loom model and serial number so they know exactly what style to send. Good luck.

Subject: [weavetech] Macomber Loom hook question

Hi
My loom is a 4 harness Macomber Ad-a-harness model B5B, purchased used
without a manual 20+ years ago.

It is a great loom however, I have just spent a frustrating time with the
hooks on the loom. They keep
hanging up on one another.

Looked at the Macomber web site and noticed "old style" (assume this is
what I
have?) and "super."

Could not find details. Is there a better solution to the old style hooks?

Does anyone have the "super" on their Macomber? Another solution?

Thanks.

The height off the floor can vary depending on which dobby you have, as the adjustment to the dobby cable turnbuckle is made to ensure full movement of the dobby arm.

I have recently moved my AVL and am in the process of setting it up.  Would someone please tell me how far off the floor the 2 treadles are?  Right now the right treadle is 8" off the floor, left one on the floor.  Thanks

I had overlooked that part of Alice's monograph previously......I stand
corrected. Moorman can be considered a kind of Lampas pickup technique if
my thinking is accurate. Thanks for pointing it out Marguerite!

Best,

Oh yes, Marguerite, you are so right!!! Lampas pick up.
I am sorry, I made a mistake before,

Hi,

In "Lampas for Shaft Looms", page 65, Alice Schlein compares the Theo
Moorman technique with lampas, and concludes that it "can be
considered lampas".

The following topic on the same page is Beiderwand.

Hello ladies !

Every time I open Weavetechs -mails regarding Beidervand   ...I said  "Whau " what a lot of usefull information. I am so happy, what a lovely group of knowing weavers.

I think that I have answers of all my questions about Beidervand. I am ready to read/study and sample.

Think it will take a time before I can show weaving samples to group. I will come back.

Best regards Lise

Hi Amy
Not sure where the problem is with all my saved Weavetech emails disappearing from my computer.  I recently had an email from Yahoo asking me if I wanted a Download of all my emails and I said “Yes” but have not had any response.
Should I now close my Yahoo Account?
Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Thank you for all your hard work for this group.
Cheers

Speaking of Complex Weavers, their library has 4 of her monographs/workshop booklets - http://www.librarything.com/catalog/cwlibrary&deepsearch=leslie+voiers

If you have a membership, you can check them out for the cost of postage!

Does anyone have contact information for Leslie Voiers? I’d like to copy one of her workshop handouts for a Michigan study group since all her materials are out of print and hard to find.

Mary,

When I went to Harrisville Designs a few years ago, I asked about Leslie and was told that she still lived in town. If the address you have for her isn’t current your best bet would be to contact Harrisville Designs, PO Box 806, Harrisville, NH  03450, Telephone:  (603) 827-3333.  I believe “Chip” is still the owner.
Good luck.  Faye Kolhonen

Hi Mary - I have one of her handouts, and it give an address:  Leslie Voiers, P.O. Box 155, Harrisville, NH  03450.  (This was in 1994, so a bit old).  (I also checked Complex Weavers Membership, no joy).

Good luck!  Diane

Maybe I cannot weave this specific weave on a Jack loom. But nevertheless I could borrow another weave.
I want to weave figurative weave. All the weavings metioned could be a choice I have to learn / read more plus weave some samples.

Hi Lise,

The Beiderwand samples I posted were done with 4 shafts and can definitely be done with a split shed on a jack loom with no special equipment. Split-shed weaving is not hard to learn.

Re: Beidervand

Sara von Tresckow

Lise,

Your best reference for lampas and Beiderwand will be John Becker’s “Pattern and Loom” – actually a Danish book. If you cannot find a copy, there is an electronic version located here:

http://donwagner.dk/Pattern-and-Loom.html

Block patterned Beiderwand can be woven on a jack loom.

Figured Beiderwand needs a Drawloom or Jacquard loom.

Again, the German museum references are very competent and would be able to help you.
