The Scottish Artists Union calculate a 'suggested rate' for artists each year, and their model is based on a (pretty generous) allowance of 65% of an artist's time being spent actually producing work - making, teaching, writing - which will earn money, while 35% is allocated to other tasks such as management, research etc. If anyone is interested their latest rates can be found at http://www.sau.org.uk/rights/pay/.
