The Scottish Artists Union calculate a 'suggested rate' for artists each year, and their model is based on a (pretty generous) allowance of 65% of an artist's time being spent actually producing work - making, teaching, writing - which will earn money, while 35% is allocated to other tasks such as management, research etc. If anyone is interested their latest rates can be found at The difference between the hourly rate charged and the hourly rate actually earned is instructive!
