Smoke generator

Good day,

I have a Hornby loco that has a smoke generator but no decoder. The loco is DCC ready, however, the smoke generator was wired to the track pickups.

I wish to put a decoder in the loco, however, I am not sure how to wire up the smoke generator.
I need help.

Regards,
Dennis

Hi Dennis,

The smoke generator may draw more power than a decoder output can source.  I would just leave the smoke generator wired to the track pick ups.  I think it is common to be wired that way.  You will get smoke all the time.  Be sure to keep smoke fluid in it when running your locomotive.

Yes, track power to operate the smoke generator.

Consider using a relay to control it.

Select a small relay with a coil that works at much less than 100mA, and contacts that can handle the smoke generator current at track voltage.

Control the relay with a decoder function.

This is what I plan to do.
