NCE Decoders
I have programed a bunch of NCE Decoders and yes, every time you program it, it does a little dance to confirm that it has excepted what you gave it.

All of the NCE decoder 'pulse' the motor - on the Programming Track. I do not know if they do that using POM. A few questions ... 1) You say "running in reverse" ... do you Stop the loco before using POM? 2) Are doing something like Write Full Sheet or Write All Sheets? That will generate a series of commands ... the dance could be the decoder responding to the series (stopping between commands). 3) I'm stumped by the "only in reverse" ... you do know that there is an NCE group? Ask your questions there (after joining). Make sure you include the decoder model. 4) Have you tried setting the baud rate to 9600? Yes, about twice as slow ... but much more reliable for all uses of DecoderPro and especially any use with "full" or "all" sheet/sheets. - Jim |

Thanks David and Alan. I am aware of these pulses with other decoders. When I use a test track, I have to make sure the loco doesn't fall off the end.
But this is different. Only with POM and running in reverse. It is a real dance not just a pulse. And I have only noticed this with NCE decoders. Anyway, it doesn't cause any issues, I hope, so we will carry on.

The only decoder I am aware of that does not have forward creep when programming is Loksound.
Loksound still pulses, but they alternate, forward, back, forward, back... Some other decoders might do this too. And it depends on the Lok whether the pulse caused the Lok to move, and how much. Some just twitch, others quickly walk off the programming track. Best to have bumpers on each end of the programming track. Thomas DeSoto, TX |

I suspect that the reason is that a small forward "jerk" is used by the decoder to generate the "acknowledgement" to the controller as programming progresses. When in the forward direction it just isn't noticed. I have noticed this when programming on the prog track when stationary. Dave

Hi All,
Have a question regarding NCE decoders and POM programming. I have TCS decoders primarily but have got a number of NCE decoders in the last year or so. They run well. That said, they seem to have a peculiar behavior when using POM. When the Loco is running in Forward and I perform POM all is okay. The issue is when I perform a POM when the Loco is running in the reverse direction. The Loco goes into "spasm" for want of a better term. It dances forward and backwards while it is programming. It programs okay but the behavior is unusual. Is there any way that this can be rectified or is it the normal behavior for NCE decoders? Thanks.........George. |
