Description:
Guys….I have been following this group for years and have really gained much knowledge… I am creating a new layout …See diagram. Switch #1 comes off existing layout..Switch #2 left turn Going to switch #5 right turn to main… or preferably from 5 too 2 to create a path to #1 and continuing to other parts of layout.... I installed a MRC auto reverse at #5 but it stalls and shorts out. When left turn at #5. I have double insulated gaps on all switches. My plan was to make a left turn at switch 5 continue to #2 make a right turn and continue off past #1 to existing lay out creating a reverse … do I need another auto reverse at #2.. Or any suggestions on how to make this happen…it is DCC

Don,

You basically have one big loop with a crossover between 2 & 5.  I would make that crossover section your reversing section as long as that crossover section is longer than your longest powered train.  You will need to double gap/insulate the track between 2 & 5. Leave the big loop as a normal, non-reversing track tied to your booster.  Make sure when you make a reversing section out of the crossover that the crossover is not tied to your booster, too.

The offending reversing section is the straight track between turnouts 2 and 5. If that section is longer than the longest train, make that the only auto-reversing track. Another longer track possibility would be to make the AR section the loop from #1 to #2 including the whole turnout #2. Either way only one AR controller is required.

Thank you I have tried both.. the diagram is part of bigger layout. Beyond 1 that spur connects to another portion of total layout. Trains comes in at 1 and can go to all track. But I want to go back out past 1 onto other part of layout. Wouldn’t I need another AR at turnout 1?

Don, you need double insulated gaps on the diverging legs at both #2 and #5 turnouts.

Connect the input of the reverser to the rails outside the reversing section.

Connect the output of the reverser to the rails between turnouts #2 and #5.

Be sure your train is short enough to completely fit in the insulated section between 2 & 5.
