resistance soldering
I just use a needle nose pliers with a rubber band around the handles to hold the wire in place. I bend the end of the wire being soldered so when the wire is held to the rail, the wire tip is forced

Wiring problem
Oh, one thing to check before wiring in the auto reverser. Make sure the loop is in fact electrically isolated from the main track; both rails. If it's not, that would be your shorting problem. Tim Ti

Wire gauge remedy
Why not use wire nuts? On my layout very drop from a rail is connected to a soldered wire from the bus with a wire nut. I've never had a problem, and it is very convenient if you need to isolate that

Keeping It All Nice Neat And Tidy!!
I've found Velcro tape to work quite well. I cut short strips, and screw them to the benchwork. It's really easy to bundle the wires with them, and quick and easy to separate them again if you need to
