Re: DCC Meters

Charles Brumbelow

Am I correct that the electricity on the track in a DCC only layout is actually AC? If so you would need an AC meter. I believe measuring amperage requires a shunt. In some situations the shunt is internal and not noticed. In others it is external.

I use this circuit board to measure current and correct for the non-sinusoid DCC waveform.  You need to buy a meter with matching specs as indicated on the website.

Hope this helps,

Hi Mike:

DCC is an AC, but a square wave. An AC volt meter will be a bit off of the true DCC voltage. But it will still show high and low values, so should still be helpful for trouble shooting.

An AC volt meter is just a DC meter with a diode bridge.

Carl.

I have used that circuit with with Harbor Freight meters. Works very well for DCC current.
My Harbor Freight meters read about 13.6 VAC on my NCE Power Cab.

Scroll down a little to low tech meters.

I belong to a club in Michigan. We have thousands of feet of track and we use only alcohol in a cleaner car to clean the track. Plastic wheels are a no no; that is the biggest problem for clean track.

Thank you all for the information on the meters.  I will order one of the lower cost meters and the adapter board and see how they work.

Thanks again...

My brother enjoy the hobby. Don't overdue it, by planning something to complicated. Most everything can be purchased online. Check out YouTube for each step of the way. Good luck.

Hi!
I do not know if you can afford this, but I have used this with Atlas switches just fine.
This product is DCC only and it will only do switch number sequentially, meaning 1-8, 2-9, etc...
Also, it's per switch price is quite low.
It is made in Europe, but available in the US on Ebay here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/DIGIKEIJS-DR4018-16-CHANNEL-SWITCH-DECODER-WORKS-WITH-ALL-DCC-BRANDS/252438372898?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

Once again...
I am going to be Odd Man Out...but I would seriously reconsider running DCC with anything Bachmann as it comes out of the box, including the Bahaman Dynamis by ESU which I do own (along with nearly every other American sold DCC system).  I own several reworked Bachmann Locomotives and not one of them is still equipped with their original decoder. Even if you simply go DC with Bachmann Track and Switches...Yes, You are going to need to solder drop down feeders as well as rework their Turnouts.
====
I am making this statement with the experience of a 7 year old in 1960 with ONE Lionel 4-6-2 on a 5x9 table on a Bottle Route Budget (See Homeless today collecting bottles for one penny each; where I got 3 cents per in 1960). I was given...Korean War vintage steel track with fiber board ties held on by staples ...and I made it work....
So...Yes,  layout can be made with Bachmann Track.
However...when it was nearly given to me...I passed.
But when a man offered me three boxes of Kato Unitrack ...after buying everything else from his layout.... at 10 cents to the MSRP $ + I took the gift gleefully.

DCC is not cheap and can be very confusing...Whoever said DCC Made EZ wants to talk to fools.

1 can I mix atlas with peco tracks
2 shuold i make sure they all same code
3 on my train layout therre will be 11 turnouts using the elect frogs on the trunouts
4 i want to run the turnout switching together  on  1 a bo0x i can use just for the turnout swtiches  and have a controller for the trains is there a switch type box i can use just for them
i hope this is a bit better so u understand it better
thank you

Stacey,
Regarding numbers 1&2:
Yes you can mix atlas and pico tracks. If you are going to use two different call sizes they make special rail joiners just for that purpose to join two different size of rails.

Regarding numbers 3&4:
Can you give us some additional information regarding the turnouts;  what do you mean about electric frogs and what type of switch box are you referring to?

I was going to cover my Bachman Two Truck Shay..  I decided not.   It was the new spectrum series.  But the gearing kept messing up.   AND that was sending back to Bachmann twice.  No, I have gave up on Bachman.  I would love to have a DCC steam locomotive someday.

1 the left and right turnouts
2 the electrofrog
3 something like the peco switch machine but better so i can switch each turnout and run my trains on the controll box i have
