Please differentiate between a voltage common reference, and a ground. I have personally removed a wire run from the ground in an AC outlet to a DCC booster GND connection.

Rob, put a resistor in series with each 5V bulb. If you have a separate 5V power supply temporarily use it and measure the current drain by the bulb then calculate the required resistor value.

AS a side note for what its worth. Allen Gartner shared in one of his Model Railroader columns that the inexpensive DVOM sold at Harbor Freight measures the AC track voltage at the correct level. I

Though it may be unrelated to your problem, you must have misread the Wiring4DCC site. Digitrax wants the GND pin on boosters, DCS, and PM42 (possibly other items, as well)

It is true, I have no operational issues. I always have about 20 engines on the track. I have a very large S scale layout 65ft X 22 ft and two levels with two large staging

Since you are not having any operational issues ... I would suspect the
problem lies in the voltage measurement.
Perhaps the meter is going bad? Maybe the meter probes are "wonky"

If your boosters' track voltages really were dropping by half, your trains would run much more slowly or not at all. Since that's not happening, the actual voltage can't be dropping that
