Transit priority makes service faster, more reliable, and easier to make connections, and would save VTA up to $70 million (or free up that amount of resources to run more service) Making buses faster and more reliable will require changes such as bus lanes, queue jumps where the bus gets priority at intersections, bus bulbs that extend the curb to allow the bus to board passengers without leaving the travel lane, and traffic signal changes, as well as changes to bus stop locations.
Making changes will depend on support from cities. For many years, street designs have prioritized private vehicles, and it will take support from residents and transit riders to make change happen.
As a model, San Jose adopted a Transit Priority policy last year, committing to actions to speed transit when they upgrade streets, and creating a toolkit for improvements to speed buses, and improve safety for people walking and bicycling.
At the meeting,
* State your name and why you think it is important to have faster and more reliable bus service in Santa Clara County
* State what city you live in and your willingness to let your city leaders know that you support Transit First policy for your city
* Share your support for transit priority measures such as bus lanes, queue jumps, and stop changes in order to make buses faster and more reliable
