FW: Help Shape the Future of Transportation in Santa Clara Co. #VTA #SVTU

Eugene Bradley

All:

We've seen posts here previously on the need for VTA to improve transit service in Santa Clara County over the years.  Examples:

* Judy Purrington wants the Santa Teresa light rail station in South San Jose to be more useful, with more bus service like the 27 and 66 terminating there instead of Kaiser.  Also, express bus service serving San Jose, North County, and South County stopping at or terminating in Santa Teresa.

* Danny Garza seeks a VTA light rail station at Ocala and Capitol Expressway in East San Jose, site of a future housing/business mixed development after Reid-Hillview Airport closes

* David Hirsch wants VTA to restore the 81 bus line along Homestead Rd. running thru Western San Jose.

* Swanee Edwards seeks Caltrain electrification in South County (Tamien-Gilroy) by having Caltrain work with VTA to make it happen.

These are just some of the public transit ideas on display.  Starting TONIGHT at 6pm online, is the first of several meetings VTA is holding to help plan public transit (as well as walking, biking, paratransit and highway projects) for Santa Clara County's future.  VTA's planning will be based on input and ideas YOU give to VTA staff on hand at these meetings.  That planning is known as Valley Transportation Plan (VTP) 2050.  Such planning is only done about once a decade, and helps determine transit projects in Santa Clara County for at least the next 20 years.

We welcome your input on the Valley Transportation Plan 2050!

Earlier this year, VTA began work on the Valley Transportation Plan 2050 (VTP 2050), a long-range, countywide planning effort will impact transportation in Santa Clara County for years to come. The VTP 2050 will serve as a policy and planning framework for all modes of travel, including transit, highways, local roads and streets, and bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure.

Community feedback is integral in developing a comprehensive transportation plan reflective of the community we serve. Now is the time to share your transportation vision for the region!

*Judy, Danny, David and Swanee remind us that there’s lots of room for ideas that would greatly improve the VTA and better serve our county’s transit needs.

*LAFCO is the entity mandated by the Cortese-Knox-Hertzberg Act to evaluate every California county’s respective special districts, at least once every 5 years.

*If Assemblymember Berman and others want to change the law, they should. But until it is changed, it needs to be implemented, like other laws in a democracy.

*The VTA, a special district in Santa Clara County, was last reviewed by LAFCO in June 2013.

*There is a difference between the VTA inviting public input and an assessment conducted by the county’s governmental entity that has been legally charged with oversight.

*The lack of oversight of the VTA has contributed to the increasingly unmet transportation needs of San Jose residents, especially those of older adults and people with disabilities.

Eugene,

While I appreciate you letting us know about this meeting, is there any way to give us a few days notice? I already have a City Council Meeting tonight at 7:00 PM, so I cannot join you. Is there a way that I can comment about my wishes for Spith County without attending this meeting?

Ever Onward,

Swanee

Eugene,

While I appreciate you letting us know about this meeting, is there any way to give us a few days notice? I already have a City Council Meeting tonight at 7:00 PM, so I cannot join you. Is there a way that I can comment about my wishes for Spith County without attending this meeting?

Ever Onward,

Swanee

This is just the first opportunity for the public to participate in the development of the VTP. Community members will be invited to view and provide input on a draft transportation project list and a draft plan next year. The final VTP 2050 plan is expected to be complete in late 2023.

The 1 issue that comes up with electrification of caltrain between tamien and gilroy is the fact that caltrain and the JPB only own the tracks between San Francisco and Tamien.  The tracks from Tamien to Gilroy are owned by the Union Pacific Railroad. So they would not just need to partner with VTA but they would need to also reach an agreement with Union Pacific Railroad to electrify their tracks between Gilroy and Tamien. Far as I am understanding from caltrain at the moment is when electrification is done they will have electrified lines between San Francisco and Tamien and then the service from Tamien to Gilroy will be done by using the Diesel Engines that are already in service at the present time.
