VTA Customer Service phone msg. after hours #VTA #Caltrain

Eugene Bradley

Following up on my prior email:

Michael also brought up an interesting point on the phone message you get from VTA Customer Service when you call them

  • after 7pm on weekdays
  • after 4pm on Saturdays
  • on Sundays and major holidays

I've attached after-hours messages from VTA as well as those from AC Transit and SamTrans/Caltrain to this email, for reference.  (You can use any audio program on your computer already to play them.) What Michael brought up that stands out when comparing VTA's after hours message to the others:

  • No reference to a Transit Police phone number for emergencies aboard transit, when the driver can't call
  • No reference to 511 for transit departure time information after hours (511 is the Bay Area's central phone number for transit & highway traffic information.))
  • No reference to other phone numbers for employment opportunities, ACCESS paratransit info, etc.

Currently, VTA's after-hours phone message tells people that their needs don't matter when Customer Service closes.  This is not professional, in my book.  People still need to ride transit and need information when Customer Service is not open.  VTA's web site, while nice, can't be accessed for those who don't have a computer or "smart phone" to access the site for information.

Let's work to make VTA's after-hours message a little more useful to those who call after hours.  This can start during Public Comment (Agenda Item #3) at the upcoming Board meeting this Thursday.
