Miniature Dolls

Dorothy Bollen <dorothygeorge@...>

I have been dressing miniature dolls probably for most of my life. I
am past retirement age now. I used to dress dolls with my nieces when
they were young. They are grandmothers now. I am still only 29! LOL

I love the idea of your patterns and an ebook for dressing dolls and
am delighted to become Member number 2

Its great to join your e-group. I am not the worlds better
dressmaker
so I really enjoy working in detail but in small scale of 1:12. I
also make 5 - 10cm bears that are jointed.

I attended a wonderful sculpting group in Johannesburg where I learnt
some basics on the subject. I have since sculpted my daughter but
have not got round to making the moulds yet. Now I am sculpting
small
polymer clay dolls (Haesar's books which are superb) and thoroughly
enjoying it.

What materials are the best to sew in for miniatures? We really find
it difficult and have to import all our fabrics so that they hang
nicely. Lace is a MAJOR problem too. Can Anyone help?
Thanks so much

Sewing In Miniature

Sue <tigress@...>

Hello ladies,
Sewing in miniature is a very challenging sort of thing to do, as I well know! Finding sources for tiny trims and natural fabrics can be hard that is why I love the internet so much! I have to say that finding trims and fabrics in another country has got to be a challenge but here are some ideas that I use: a thrift shop or second hand store often carries a good selection of solid colored blouses or skirts in various fibers and sometimes even with mini prints on them. For something that is a scale miniature you want to find a 100% cotton, silk, linen or light weight wool. It is important to have a full 100% of the fiber as a synthetic man made fiber will refuse to do what you want in miniature. There are, however exceptions to the rule a silky of polyester like what is used for a fancy nighty from Frederick's or Victoria's Secret is perfect for a satin dress. Chiffon is a good fabric for miniatures too along with some light weight acetates. Being a Fashion Major as I was in college I learned to go down rows of clothes and tell fabrics by touch and usually I can do it without looking at a tag!

Miniature trims are another story but again look in thrift shops on children's clothes sometimes the laces on an adorable little girls dress will work perfectly for a tiny bear or doll and don't hesitate to cut up a larger piece of lace to get one part that would be perfect for the blank spot on your outfit.. Most children's dresses or outfits are also made of natural fibers or of a very small blend and can be used as the outfit. For myself I never cut up children's clothes as I have a daughter to put them on and she has dolls that her outgrown stuff fits so why cut up doll clothes? My mother saved some of my clothes so she is also wearing things I wore at her age too so I don't think I could possibly cut up anything she or I wore!

I also wanted to mention that there are a multitude of newsletters and digest groups that are specifically for miniature dolls and also ones for findings and fabric. My favorite is Small Stuff Digest and Mini Scenes and Things both of which have tons of members and are so supportive and have soooo many more ideas than me. Both of these can be found at E-groups too!
Other ideas are to do swaps with people in other countries with no money exchanging hands and the package labeled as toys there are (so I'm told) little or no import fees just the price of international shipping. I am currently swapping across the US with 2 ladies one for dolls and one for fabrics in exchange I'm making my lovely little dresses for them to finish roomboxes and dollhouses! the only thing cost is shipping and a little time.

Sorry to run on and on like this but once I get going usually the ideas start flowing! I hope this helps!

I do have to put in my 2 cents about something else though, I have started and completed the section on making a pattern draft for pants and I am going to post a ***new*** measuring a lady doll sheet very soon. I am currently working on the bodice draft and the next chore is the skirt draft. The pants, bodice and skirt drafts will all be in my e-book Pattern Making for Dolls and Pattern Making for Miniatures. I am so excited that I am finally getting started on these sections of my book and am able to test the process on multiple dolls!!!

As a limited time offer once I get the sections into the computer I will send you a section either pants, skirts or bodices for free via e-mail. I will not post this on my site it is only for members of the newsletter! I'd like to know if you are interested and if so which section. I'd like to request one thing in return though feedback on how easy or hard my instructions are. I guess if you want one of the sections I need to ask you to be a guinea pig tester! LOL Please pass this on to other groups you belong to but make it clear that it is for active members of the newsletter only!

Guess that's finally all for today!

Hi Everyone,
Sue, I like what you have written so far on the pattern drafting for dolls.  When do you expect your book to be published?  Can we sign up ahead of time for a copy?

Thanks,

Re: book

Sue Darby <tigress134@...>

I hope to have my book finished and ready to start printing by June or really close to June. I'll put your message in my "waiting list" folder since I have a small list going for  "when it comes out notify me I want it!!". I will be definitely posting to just about every doll list and miniatures list I'm on which is close to 30. I'm going to work hard to get it out on time. Just my Crash Course took me 8 days to do it all! So if I can keep that up I should be able to crank it out reasonably fast but I do have a toddler to chase and a life too so we'll see what does or doesn't get in the way. :-)
BTW have I already sent you a copy? I'm looking through my list of who I've sent it to so far and have only found your request but not that it's been sent.
Let me know please.

Re: New file uploaded to suestinycostumes

Not available <tigress134@...>

So how many have joined just to get the crash course? I'm sort of
trying to keep track of how many copies are out there just for my own
records of course.
I'll upload an updated copy with a minor modification which if you
already have it but haven't printed you can do yourself-- adding page
numbers.
To do this in Word simply go to Insert and go to page numbers and hit
ok the default settings work fine and when you print you'll have page
numbers!
I have a couple more mior modifications and a couple really big ones
to work on so I'll upload a modified file and let the list know when
I do it and what the modifications were.
Thanks to all who are reading and testing this for me!

the titles of the books themselves. Any thoughts?

C'mon ladies talk to me!

At this moment the only way to actually get a message through to me
is through this list or my alternate e-mail addresse
tigress28@... So if anyone already on this list has a
question for me start asking. My @home e-mail server is down so I
know I have 200+ more e-mails to go through since it's been down for
15 hours!
Ask away and I'll check this several times during the day!

The WIN95 file

dml.glantz@...

Hi, Sue. Joined your group and looking forward to seeing lots of
goodies. May I have time for all this is my silent prayer. Haven't
downloaded the Crash Course yet- will wait for this weekend. It's
about 40 pages, you say? What's in the WIN95 folder? Thanks for your
message to me about the the course being on your site.
Cheers, Dorothy Whoops! Does this go to the whole group?

Re: The WIN95 file

Sue <tigress134@...>

I have to say yes it does go to the entire group but that is fine
because right now my mail server is dead and I'm not getting mail.
As for what's in the Win 95 folder it's the crash course zipped
becasue when I saved it as a win 95 file it created a huge 20 meg
file. Now what I **think** might work is for soemone to download and
unzip it and save it as a 95 file on their system and it should shink
dramatically in size. IF this is true please feel free to tell me so
and post the file to the group as an attachment and I'll replace my
zipped file with a true Win 95 Word 6 format file. Otherwise I'm
sorry but those of you with Win 95-- I'm truely sorry! :-S
The file is 37 pages and I'll be posting an add on for miniatures in
a few days but that's about it.
If anyone has questions about the information contained within the
file or any comments or suggestions go ahead and post them here it
might spark a discussion!
Enjoy what I wrote and I am going to try to finish it and then send
both books off for copyright the instant they are done.
