Humanity is putting on weight. Across the globe, in wealthy countries and developing nations, among children and adults, an increasing number of people are overweight or obese. Today, nearly 40 percent of the worlds adults fall into one of those categories, according to new estimates by a global network of researchers called the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration. . Economic forces are conspiring to cause the great global weight gain. Countries grow wealthier and increase consumption. People move from rural areas to cities, where they have ready access to inexpensive, processed foods. Machines do work that humans once did, decreasing the amount of energy people use. And global trade means the reach of junk food has never been greater. Up against these trends, no country has figured out how to reverse the rise of obesity. . In 2014, there were 114 countries where more than half the adult population was considered overweight, including much of the Americas, Europe, and the Middle East, according to World Health Organization data. In small Pacific Island nations and Persian Gulf states, more than two-thirds of the population is considered overweight or obese, a higher prevalence than in the United States. . Researchers estimate that excess weight caused 3.4 million deaths worldwide in 2010. Being overweight or obese is a risk factor for chronic conditions like cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Those are rising worldwide, too. There were an estimated 422 million adults with diabetes in 2014, a rate of 8.5 percent, compared to 4.7 percent in 1980, according to new estimates published by the World Health Organization April 6. . Diabetes is rising fastest in low- and middle-income countries. Its most common in the region that includes the Middle East and North Africa, where levels of physical inactivity are high. . . . The police are killing people, and the deaths are being ruled as justified without the general public even being aware this is taking place, at a time when the #BlackLivesMatter movement is calling for greater transparency and accountability. . According to a new study from The Guardian and their police fatality database known as The Counted, dozens of deaths in police custody 1 in every 6 deaths for the first three months of 2015 were found justified and the officers involved were cleared of wrongdoing and returned to the force. The report calculates that at this rate, nearly 200 deaths by police last year will be officially approved, away from community scrutiny. In addition, even as families of the victims of police brutality seek questions regarding the deaths of their loved ones, one quarter of police-related fatalities for the first quarter of 2015 remain unresolved or the investigation is pending. . Of 289 people killed in the first three months of 2015, 202 cases have now been ruled justified or accidental, according to the report. But in 51 of these, no public statements announcing the decision appear to have been made by authorities involved, and no local media reports could be found through extensive online, public records and media archives searches. . Further, in another 71 cases, officials either declined to disclose details after at least three requests from reporters, or confirmed that the investigation was ongoing over a year later. However, under the current landscape which has taken shape following the movement emanating from the August 2014 killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri there is a dramatic increase in prosecutions of such cases. . In police fatalities from early 2015, 10 officers have been charged, resulting in one conviction to date. In Chatham County (Savannah), Georgia, former deputy Jason Kenny was found guilty in the jailhouse death of college student Mathew Ajibade, 21. According to CNN, Ajibade was kicked and punched in the head numerous times, hogtied and dragged away by officers. Kenny, who is white, and his former supervisor, Cpl. Maxine Evans a 56-year-old Black woman faced involuntary manslaughter. . However, Kenny was convicted of a lesser charge of cruelty, while Evans was found guilty of perjury and public records fraud in connection with falsifying a report. Gregory Brown, a nurse on duty at the jail, was acquitted of involuntary manslaughter but was found guilty of making a false statement. . . The complete article may be read at the URL above. . . The consensus has been supported by numerous studies and yet the idea that the statistic is made up, or wrong, is still a common position among climate doubters and a major tool used to foster public uncertainty about climate change. . Now, researchers have reinforced this finding of a scientific consensus once again in a new paper, published Wednesday in the journal Environmental Research Letters. The paper finds that an overwhelming majority of climate experts agree on the issue, and that even though the contrarian movement begs to differ there is no substantial scientific debate about it. . While the consensus has been documented by many studies over the years, the most widely cited is a 2013 paper led by John Cook of the University of Queenslands Global Change Institute. The study examined thousands of peer-reviewed scientific papers and found that, among those papers that took a position on the causes of climate change, 97.1 percent of them supported the idea that global warming is caused by humans. . Earlier this year, however, University of Sussex professor Richard Tol published a comment criticizing the 2013 study and suggesting that 97 percent may be too high a figure. In his comment, Tol returned to some of the published research on the consensus and re-examined the accompanying data, noting that Cooks paper did not include studies that took no position on climate change, and that surveys including scientists who dont study climate tend to have somewhat lower rates of consensus. . After examining the comment, however, Cook and a team of other researchers concluded that these arguments were problematic at best. In their new paper, they re-examined the published literature on the climate consensus, finding that the 97 percent calculation remains a robust and well-supported statistic. . The biggest flaw [in Tols argument] is that he misrepresents many of the other studies on the consensus, said Cook, lead author on the new paper. . He tries to argue that our paper is an outlier is different to all the other studies in their estimates of the expert consensus, Cook said. But the way he arrives at the expert consensus is by using groups that include non-experts, which is a classic technique to try to obtain lower estimates of the scientific consensus. . . Some past studies on climate economics, like the famous Stern Report a decade ago, assessed the macro-level risk to GDP as a whole. Others have drilled down to explore what worldwide action to control carbon would mean for fossil fuel investments specifically. But this new report, by estimating the risk to all financial assets and portfolios, finds a powerful middle ground that should get investor attention. . But its not just the investment community that should rethink where its capital goes. Any large company needs to take a hard look as well. A couple of key questions to ponder: Do you, or your suppliers, have significant coastal assets? . snip . Where are your financial assets invested and in what classes? . snip . Putting a value on the risk or opportunity is an important first step to make it all understandable to business. And the numbers these banks and academics are coming up with certainly help stir the souls (or wallets) of the investor community. But on some level theyre absurd. As the owner of the Sport-Med list on the British national academic server, JISC, I have shared a large body of sources in posts to that list and to my network about obesity. Since Listserv lists do not provide persistent URLs for search results, I will provide in this post several links to this content in that each search system works diffrently and one can then chose the links that work best for them. I am also providing search results from around ten databases for the term obesity.
. By the way one of the links I will provide is to Groups.IO. I am mentioning this as some, perhaps many of you do not have access to own and run a list on a Listserv server. Groups.IO was started in September 2014 by Mark Fletcher, a former Yahoo Groups manager. Since I have had major serious problems with both Yahoo Groups and Google Groups, it is very good to have Groups.IO around. I no longer use Google Groups and I am not certaion that Yahoo Groups will continue if Yahoo is sold. . One Saturday evening Groups.IO was completely down. I searched my Temple email and quickly found Mark's email address and sent him a post informing him of this problem. Within two hours, Groups.IO was back and an apology email went to me and one to the owner/moderator lists AND Mark was on his last day of vacation in Paris, France. . One reason to share this information is that folks on this list should consider creating public discussion groups with extensive content on physical fitness, obesity and other topics that you folks consider important to share. One can find and share a post with a citation, a link and excerpts in five to ten minutes if not complicated. Public lists get the message out via Google indexing and both Wordpress for blogs and Groups.IO are well indexed by Google as is Listserv for public lists that anyone can view. . Medical errors kill more people than car crashes or new disease outbreaks. They kill more people annually than breast cancer, AIDS, plane crashes, or drug overdoses. A new study estimates that they are the third leading cause of death in the United States, causing a quarter-million fatalities in 2013 alone. . Patient safety researchers Marty Makary and Michael Daniel published new data in the British Medical Journal Tuesday suggesting that preventable medical errors resulted in 251,454 deaths in 2013. If that estimate is correct, the only bigger causes of death are heart disease and cancer. . The researchers worry, however, that their number is actually an underestimate that medical harm kills even more patients than we're currently able to count. . "Something like 2 to 3 percent of people who go into the hospital are going to have some pretty severe harm as a result," Don Berwick, the Obama administration's former Medicare administrator, previously told Vox. "Australian studies show that the rate might be as high as 12 percent. The harder you look, and the more you study the issue, the more errors you find." . It's incredibly difficult to know how many deaths result from medical harm . When there is a plane crash in the United States, federal law requires airlines to report that information to the National Transportation Safety Board. It investigates each incident and tries to figure out what went wrong and how it could be prevented in the future. . But there's no analogous body in health care. . When a patient dies as a result of medical harm, there's no regulator that has to get notified the hospital doesn't send off paperwork about the error that occurred. Sometimes the information gets jotted down in the patient's medical record, but even that is not a certainty. . This makes estimating the frequency of medical harm very difficult and researchers generally believe that their figures underestimate the prevalence of harm. Their study uses data from four recent studies, all of which relied on medical records to estimate fatalities caused by medical errors. So the authors know that their estimate of fatalities misses any errors that weren't captured in the medical record. . "We believe [our estimate] understates the true incidence of death due to medical error because the studies cited rely on errors extractable in documented health records and include only inpatient deaths," Makary and Daniel write. . This post was shared on the JISC Disabilities-Education list to discuss some methods of making your content known and used in the social networking arena of discussion groups and blogs. Lesson number one is right in the heading which I changed from the friendly HI to a much more descriptive title that lets the reader know what I am talking about and read or not read based on their interest in this topic. I hope that some readers will find useful ideas in this post.

One cannot control the decisions to respond, or not respond to the posts and other forms of writing placed on the internet by you. One can better control finding your content by others who search Google with related terminology. One method for making ones ideas and knowledge of resources pubic and therefore accessable to readers needing this information is to post to groups that are public and archived so that search engines will find and index ones shared content. This can include lists that you create and own or on topic lists with other ownership. "DISABILITY-RESEARCH" AND (jisc OR jiscmail) http://tinyurl.com/jexpaq5 http://tinyurl.com/zugx39n Use specific labels in all posts that share a type of content in ones posts so that folks looking for that specific kind of information will find as much of that type of information if they use words found in your label in your shared messages. I label my use of the SITE: command in Google Web searches as "Google Domain Limited Web Search" and in parenthesis label the kind of search I am using. Since most posters in the world do not share links to search results and of those who do, very few do shared results of searches using the SITE: Google command and nobody is using that phrase but me, my content of that type results from a search of that phrase. Hence, Google indexes that phrase so that anyone picking up on that phrase and searching it will find a small library of posts that have that search command embedded in those posts with links to the searches and search results shared in those posts via those links. http://tinyurl.com/jfg7llx In Google search results always click at the bottom to get to the last page of results, often a low number and then click on the link at the bottom ******************************************************************** In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 11 already displayed. If you like, "you can repeat the search with the omitted results included." ******************************************************************** In this case one now can see around 170 results instead of 11 and of course share the link to this version of the search instead of the link to the eleven results. One can create libraries of content on various topics through their own websites on Google Sites and by posting to their own publically archived discussion groups, publically archived discussion groups in fields relevant to the posts and on Wordpress and other blogs that again are public so that their content is indexed by Google as Google indexing controls see fit. It takes substantial effort to do this kind of work, but if one believes their ideas and content are worth sharing, one will make these efforts. One can use resources like Yahoo Groups, Groups.IO, Nabble, Freelists, Wordpress, any Listserv with relevant public lists that are on topic for your content for these sharings. Creating your own list(s) will protect you from readers who complain that your sharings are unwelcome because they are off topic or guilty of some other crime against humanity as it is your list and they are your guests. Many if not all of the lists on JISC are public. I own the Sport-Med list on JISC and JISC is a marvelous list service. This list is a very active and a very good discussion group on this network of lists. Consider this link on the topic area of this list. http://tinyurl.com/hhr7csn Use the ways in which your information is tagged, use them in searches, for example, and people will find and learn from your shared content. One can even create unique but simple tags that claim your use of a resource, consider the phrase "Temple Summon search". https://www.google.com/#q=%22temple+summon+search%22 Since for the most part I am the only person in the world describing the Temple University version of this Proquest Discovery database, the "Summon" search tool with this group of three words in that order, a search of them leads to mostly my content. These are some techniques that can be used to put content online and have it read by interested folk by the use of search results that exploit your labeling of your content. I hope that this helps.
