New Critique Sees Flaws in Landmark Analysis of Psychology Studies

A landmark 2015 report that cast doubt on the results of dozens of published psychology studies has exposed deep divisions in the field, serving as a reality check for many working researchers but as an affront to others who continue to insist the original research was sound.

.

On Thursday, a group of four researchers publicly challenged the report, arguing that it was statistically flawed and, as a result, wrong.

.

The 2015 report, called the Reproducibility Project, found that less than 40 studies in a sample of 100 psychology papers in leading journals held up when retested by an independent team. The new critique by the four researchers countered that when that teams statistical methodology was adjusted, the rate was closer to 100 percent.

.

Neither the original analysis nor the critique found evidence of fraud or manipulation of data.

.

The critique was published in Science, the journal that published the original report. On Thursday, Science also published a strong rebuttal from the authors of the original replication project.

.

That study got so much press, and the wrong conclusions were drawn from it, said Timothy D. Wilson, a professor of psychology at the University of Virginia and an author of the new critique. Its a mistake to make generalizations from something that was done poorly, and this we think was done poorly.

.

Brian A. Nosek, a colleague of Dr. Wilsons at Virginia who coordinated the original replication project, which took several years, countered that the critique was highly biased: They are making assumptions based on selectively interpreting data and ignoring data thats antagonistic to their point of view.

.

The challenge comes as the field of psychology is facing a generational change, with young researchers beginning to share their data and study designs before publication, to improve transparency. Still, the new critique is likely to feed an already lively debate about how best to conduct and evaluate so-called replication projects of studies.

CONCLUSION

No single indicator sufficiently describes replication success, and the five indicators examined here are not the only ways to evaluate reproducibility. Nonetheless, collectively these results offer a clear conclusion: A large portion of replications produced weaker evidence for the original findings despite using materials provided by the original authors, review in advance for methodological fidelity, and high statistical power to detect the original effect sizes. Moreover, correlational evidence is consistent with the conclusion that variation in the strength of initial evidence (such as original P value) was more predictive of replication success than variation in the characteristics of the teams conducting the research (such as experience and expertise). The latter factors certainly can influence replication success, but they did not appear to do so here.

.

Reproducibility is not well understood because the incentives for individual scientists prioritize novelty over replication. Innovation is the engine of discovery and is vital for a productive, effective scientific enterprise. However, innovative ideas become old news fast. Journal reviewers and editors may dismiss a new test of a published idea as unoriginal. The claim that we already know this belies the uncertainty of scientific evidence. Innovation points out paths that are possible; replication points out paths that are likely; progress relies on both. Replication can increase certainty when findings are reproduced and promote innovation when they are not. This project provides accumulating evidence for many findings in psychological research and suggests that there is still more work to do to verify whether we know what we think we know.

Characteristics of Physician Office Visits for Obesity
by Adults Aged 20 and Over: United States, 2012

NCHS Data Brief No. 237, March 2016

Anjali Talwalkar, M.D., M.P.H., and Frances McCarty, M.Ed., Ph.D.

Key findings

Data from the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, 2012

  • In 2012, 11 million visits, or an annual visit rate of 49 visits per 1,000 persons,
to physician offices for obesity were made by adults aged 20 and over.
  • Annual visit rates for obesity varied by age and sex.
  • Additional chronic conditions were listed more frequently at visits for obesity
than at visits for other diagnoses.
  • Visits for obesity were 25% more likely to include assessments of height and
weight and of blood pressure, and more than 50% more likely to include testing
of blood glucose and lipids, compared with visits for other diagnoses.
  • Health education about diet and nutrition, exercise, or weight reduction was at
least four times more likely to be offered at visits for obesity compared with visits
    for other diagnoses.

Obesity, a complex and costly condition, affects more than one-third of adults
in the United States (1). It raises the risk of morbidity from chronic diseases and is a
major cause of preventable death (2). Healthy People 2020 objectives for weight status
include the delivery of weight-related services in health care settings (3).
This report examines health care visits for obesity by adults aged 20 and over in 2012.
A visit for obesity is one where the provider listed obesity as one of the diagnoses for the
visit. National estimates on the assessment of risk factors and the provision of
health-education services at these visits are presented.

Keywords: chronic conditions, health education, National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey

What was the obesity visit rate to physician offices for adults in 2012,
and did visit rates vary by age or sex?

In 2012, 49 visits per 1,000 persons aged 20 and over were made to physician offices in the
United States for obesity (Figure 1). This amounts to 11 million annual visits or 2% of all visits by
nonpregnant, nonpostpartum adults (data not shown).

The visit rate was significantly lower for patients aged 20–39 (32 visits per 1,000) compared with
older age groups. There was no difference between the visit rates of patients aged 40–59 and
patients aged 60 and over.

Women had a significantly higher obesity visit rate (60 visits per 1,000) than men (37 visits).

 .

Figure 1. Physician office visit rates for obesity, by age and sex: United States, 2012

Figure 1 is a horizontal bar chart showing physician office rates for obesity among adults aged 20 and over by age group and sex for the year 2012.

1Significant difference between 20–39 age group and all other age groups (p < 0.05).
2Significant difference between women and men (p < 0.05).
NOTES: Visit rates are based on the U.S. Census Bureau’s July 1, 2012 estimates of the civilian noninstitutionalized
population of the United States. A visit for obesity is a visit in which obesity is listed by the provider as one of up to
three diagnoses for the visit.
SOURCE: CDC/NCHS, National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, 2012.

.

Were additional chronic conditions listed at physician office visits for obesity by adults?

An additional chronic condition was listed at 73% of visits for obesity compared with 56% of visits for other diagnoses (Figure 2).

Hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and depression were listed at a higher percentage of visits for obesity than at
visits for other diagnoses (42% compared with 32%; 27% compared with 20%; 24% compared with 13%; and 15%
compared with 11%, respectively).

Hypertension was the most commonly listed chronic condition at visits for obesity (42%).

Asthma and arthritis were not more likely to be listed at visits for obesity than at visits for other conditions.

Figure 2. Physician office visits with selected chronic conditions listed, by visit diagnosis: United States, 2012

Figure 2 is a horizontal bar chart showing the percentage of physician office visits with selected chronic conditions listed by visits with and without an obesity diagnosis listed among adults aged 20 and over for the year 2012.

1Difference between visits for obesity and visits for all other diagnoses is statistically significant (p < 0.05).

How often were selected health risk factors assessed at visits for obesity
compared with visits for other diagnoses by adults?

A higher percentage of visits for obesity had both height and weight recorded at the visit (78%)
than visits for other diagnoses (58%) (Figure 3).

A higher percentage of visits for obesity had blood pressure recorded at the visit (92%)
than visits for other diagnoses (69%).

Blood glucose or hemoglobin A1c testing and lipid profile testing were more frequently ordered
at visits for obesity than at visits for other diagnoses.

There was no difference in assessment of tobacco use at visits for obesity compared
with visits for other diagnoses.

Summary

According to data from 2011 through 2012, 78.6 million adults in the United States are obese (1).
This report examined visits to physician offices for obesity. The health care delivered during these
visits, specifically assessment of related risk factors and health education, was significantly different
from care delivered at visits for other diagnoses. Visits for obesity were more likely to include testing
for blood glucose and lipids as well as assessments of height, weight, and blood pressure.
Additionally, weight-related health-education services were more likely to be listed at visits for obesity
compared with visits for other diagnoses. While health education is offered relatively more often at visits
for obesity, overall, it is offered at less than one-half of these visits. At least one weight-related service
was ordered or provided at 40% of visits for obesity. Examining office visits for obesity can help monitor
and inform ongoing efforts to meet Healthy People 2020 objectives for weight status in health care settings.

Definitions

Diet and nutrition health-education services: Refers to any topics related to the foods or beverages
consumed by the patient. Examples include general dietary guidelines for health promotion and disease
prevention, dietary restrictions to treat or control a specific medical problem or condition, and dietary
instructions related to medications. It also includes referrals to other health professionals, such as
dietitians and nutritionists.

Exercise health-education services: Refers to any topics related to the patient’s physical conditioning
or fitness. Examples include information aimed at general health promotion and disease prevention,
and information given to treat or control a specific medical condition. It also includes referrals to other
health and fitness professionals. It does not include referrals for physical therapy.

Visit for obesity: Refers to a visit in which obesity is listed by the provider as one of up to three diagnoses
for the visit. All physician office visits for obesity are included across all specialties (medical, surgical, and
primary care specialties).

Weight-reduction health-education services: Refers to information given to the patient to assist in the
goal of weight reduction. It also includes referrals to other health professionals for the purpose of weight
reduction.

Data source and methods

Data from the 2012 National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS) were analyzed. NAMCS is an
annual, nationally representative survey of visits to nonfederal, office-based physicians, excluding the
specialties of anesthesiology, radiology, and pathology. It is conducted by the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics. The 2012 NAMCS sample design
and sample size differs from previous years. In 2012, NAMCS used a stratified two-stage sample,
with physicians selected in the first stage and visits in the second stage. The sample size increased
fivefold to allow for state-level estimates in the 34 most populous states. A sample weight is computed
for each sample visit that accounts for design stages. The survey data are inflated or weighted to
produce unbiased national annual estimates of office visits (4). The unweighted physician response
rate was 58.7% (59.7% weighted). The unweighted visit response rate for the 2012 survey was 39.3%
(39.4% weighted).

Up to three visit diagnoses are collected for each sampled visit. The diagnoses are specified by the provider,
not the patient. A visit for obesity was defined as any listed diagnosis code 278.00 or 278.01 based on the
International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Edition, Clinical Modification (5). Visits for obesity include visits
to any physician specialty, including medical, surgical, and primary care specialties. Visits by patients for
pregnancy or postpartum-related diagnoses were excluded.

Recorded height and weight measurements at the visit were not used to calculate body mass index and
determine or verify a diagnosis of obesity because of the high proportion of visits without both height and
weight recorded. Height and weight data were not recorded in 44% of visit records by nonpregnant,
nonpostpartum patients, and they were not recorded in 23% of records with a visit diagnosis of obesity.
Therefore, using height and weight to define obesity may not produce representative national estimates
about ambulatory care for obesity.

Data analyses were performed using the statistical packages SAS version 9.3 (SAS Institute, Cary, N.C.)
and SUDAAN version 10.0 (RTI International, Research Triangle Park, N.C.). Differences in visit characteristics
were evaluated with a two-tailed t test at the p < 0.05 significance level. All comparisons reported in the text
are statistically significant unless otherwise indicated.

RE: Metropolitan Destinations That Straddle International Borders : "Albeit Wikipedia"

On a tourism discussion group the question below was asked and an excellent response provided perhaps the only source out there with an answer, perhaps there are other sources of this information, perhaps not.
The key fact is that an apology of sorts was needed for this information as the answer provided came from the black sheep of academic knowledge in the minds of many academicians. DO NOT USE THE WIKIPEDIA AS A SOURCE IN YOUR PAPERS. Really?

The Question

"I am looking for examples of major urban destinations that straddle a national boundary.  In North America, Niagara Falls is an illustration.  Are there other examples of significant bi-national (border-crossing) destinations?"

Answer Source: Wikipedia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
List_of_metropolitan_areas_that_overlap_multiple_countries

OR

http://tinyurl.com/z7tkfe6

.

.

First of all, the question is a most interesting one and I am glad a good answer was found. It is no surprise that the Wikipedia was the source of this answer. The Wikipedia also suggests vocabulary that could be used in a search for this type of information with the phrase "multiple countries".

("tourist sites" OR "tourist attractions" OR "tourist attraction" OR "tourist destination") AND ("shared site") AND ("two countries" OR "dual countries" OR "multiple countries")

A search of Google Books with that search strategy produces limited results and offers at the end a link to get omitted results which finds 42 items. The relevance of all is poor it would appear scanning titles, the closest that I found in looking was about water management by two countries in Yellowstone Park

Connecting Place to Practice - Park Planning and Policy Lab.
www.parklab.uiuc.edu/Connecting%20Place%20to%20Practice%20DRAFT...
The two countries cooperate to manage these waters jointly and protect them for future generations. ...... river with Yellowstone National Park, texts centered on the Park as a tourist destination are .... Competing perspectives of a shared site.

http://www.parklab.uiuc.edu/Connecting%20Place%20to%20Practice%20DRAFT.pdf

"albeit Wikipedia"

This is a very mild statement of a much stronger edict heard from high school teachers and from college professors frequently. I am not advocating that tourism faculty change this rule for their students, I have actually encountered quite a few teachers at college who do not want any encyclopedia cited in student research papers despite the embarrassment of riches of scholarly subject specific encyclopedias in many subject fields.

http://tinyurl.com/hucsczo

https://www.google.com/search?tbm=bks&q=encyclopedia+OR+encyclopedias

OR

http://tinyurl.com/z69s42a

OR consider this link from Google Books

(encyclopedia OR encyclopedias) AND (tourism OR tourist OR tourists OR hospitality OR geography OR places OR countries OR country)

http://tinyurl.com/zqewdas

In all of these encyclopedias in Google Books, no such list of multiple country tourist sites was found with the search of Google Books by the strategy cited above.

Encyclopedias and the use of Google searches are the way in which the general public and also academicians gain a basic understanding or starting point for learning about an unfamiliar topic. The Wikipedia is probably the leading encyclopedia for this learning. Would student learning through research assignments be improved in the area of critical thinking and critical evaluation of sources if instead of banning the Wikipedia, citing Wikipedia articles came with the requirement of comparing the articles content and value with other encyclopedia articles or with the other sources cited in the research paper?

Actually, it may come as a surprise that the Wikipedia has been the subject or part of the topic of academic research quite extensively.

Databases Vastly Underreport Police Homicides

But a CDC database that began in 2003 may help solve that problem.

Police homicides are drastically underreported in the most-used statistical databases. Fortunately, there exists a better alternative, public-health researchers report today in the American Journal of Public Healtha national system that's been in place since 2003, and that, as of last year, 32 states participate in.

.

"Recent media attention to the killings of civilians by police has given rise to a national conversation on the use of lethal force by law enforcement: when it is justified and how best to reduce its use while ensuring the greatest possible safety to police," writes a team of public-health researchers led by Harvard University School of Public Health's Catherine Barber.

.

Unfortunately, two main sources of data on police killingsthe Federal Bureau of Investigation's Supplementary Homicide Reports, part of its voluntary Uniform Crime Reporting system, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Vital Statistics databasegrossly underreport the numbers, sometimes because reports simply fail to mention police involvement. For researchers, that makes it difficult to understand who police are killing, why it's happening, and what could be done to reduce deaths.

.

On average, police killed 0.24 people per 100,000 every year.

.

On the other hand, a CDC initiative that began with just six states in 2003called the National Violent Death Reporting Systemoffers some hope. NVDRS draws on both police reports and a death certificate or coroner's report for each violent death, and it includes two brief narratives based on those reports, along with a simple "type of death" indicatorhomicide, suicide, or accident, for example. But how good is that indicator?

Statistics and Data

http://www.nei.nih.gov/eyedata/

In 2001, a consensus meeting was convened by the National Eye Institute at which many of the world's leading ophthalmic epidemiologists
created standard case definitions for the eye conditions included in this report. Data was obtained from a review of the major epidemiological
studies with the cooperation of their authors. Age, race and sex-specific prevalence rates were then combined using a meta-analysis technique
for reducing the overall variance of the pooled rate. Appropriate logistic regression models were fit to the age, race and sex-specific pooled
prevalence rates. In the initial report, these rates were applied to the 2000 U.S. Census population. In collaboration with Prevent Blindness
America, the prevalence rates have now been applied to the 2010 U.S. Census population.
