Primary Function of Organizational Unit:

The Brody School of Medicine (BSOM) Office of Clinical and Educational Scholarship supports learner, faculty, and staff excellence in scholarly activities pertaining to patient care, population health, health professions education, and professional development in academic medicine. The office directly supports clinical and educational scholarly projects within BSOM, provides education and consultation on project methodology and dissemination of findings, and fosters scholarly collaboration within BSOM and ECU Health, a not-for-profit, 1,447-bed hospital system serving more than 1.4 million people across 29 predominantly rural counties in eastern North Carolina

Job Duties:

The Postdoctoral Scholar reports to the Assistant Dean of Clinical and Educational Scholarship at the BSOM Department of Academic Affairs. This position will participate in the design, conduct, and dissemination of clinical research projects, and contribute towards building excellence in rural health and health equity research at BSOM and ECU Health. The Postdoctoral Scholar will have opportunities to collaborate with BSOM faculty, staff, and students, as well as clinicians and administrators at ECU Health.

Projects assigned to this position may include research on increasing access to health care for rural and disadvantaged patient populations; research on addressing social determinants of health within clinical and community-based contexts; research on improving healthcare quality and the patient experience for patients from minoritized and historically disadvantaged groups; and evaluation of clinical practice changes and quality improvement programs through an equity lens.

Scholars are expected to demonstrate compliance with established guidelines and regulatory standards for research including biosafety, responsible conduct of research and human subjects training.

Approximately 30% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to Developing collaborative clinical research projects related to rural health, health equity, social determinants of health, and diversity, equity, and inclusion in medical education.

Approximately 30% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to Selecting and using appropriate methods for clinical research projects, while maintaining compliance with relevant regulations for management and analysis of sensitive data.

Approximately 30% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to contributing to academic manuscripts, grant submissions, and other scholarly works.

Approximately 10% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to other duties as assigned

Minimum Education/Experience:

English Proficiency

Excellent written and oral communication skills 

[PhD, MD, DDS, DMD or a combination of these degrees] Doctoral degree in a discipline related to the field assigned. ABD (all but dissertation) candidates will be considered if doctoral degree will have been conferred prior to the position start date. Experience with quantitative research in areas related to health equity is required. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. 

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:

Experience with peer-reviewed publication in the health sciences. Publication or presentation of research projects related to rural health, health equity, population health, health services, patient outcomes, or health professions education. Experience with qualitative research or mixed-methods research. Training or experience in advanced quantitative methods. Training or experience in program evaluation or interventional study design.
