SMA Statement on Dobbs Decision

Anika,  Thank you for sending this document.  I had only one grammatical edit but don’t understand how I am to make that edit.
The content seems just fine—moving, strong, important—at a time when I feel—my friends feel—incredibly distressed by this socially vicious and both historically and culturally-obtuse decision.  It’s based on a tiny legal twist, and ever so typical of the lawyers I have known, such as my brothers and cousins, all of whom love twists and twisting people; it’s a specialty, all right!  I feel the Supreme Court has sold itself to extremists, and their abortion and gun control decisions only increase the stress of living in a collapsing society.

I thank all of you for making this public effort.  Congratulations.

Claire

Dear Society of Medical Anthropology community members,

As many of you will have heard, the United States Supreme Court recently released the decision in Dobbs v. Jackson, which has significant implications for access to abortion in the United States. A group of concerned medical anthropologists has drafted the following statement for consideration as an official statement of the SMA. We have reviewed it as an Executive Board and would like to turn it over to you, our community, for further commentary. There will be an open commentary period for two weeks, after which we will revise the statement prior to offering a final version for majority vote. We greatly look forward to your comments. Please find the google doc open for commenting at this link.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Michelle Munyikwa, SMA Policy Committee Chair, and Carolyn Smith-Morris, SMA Executive Board President.
