Telescopes At Library, Presentation and (Weather Permitting) Observing 30 January?

Forrest Erickson

Chelsea,

Back on the email of 7 December I also suggested January 30.
Can we proceed with such a program but at 7:00 PM?
Please advise.

The idea is ask the public to whom Santa brought at telescope to bring their scopes and we will help them become familiar with the features of the scopes that show up and then (weather permitting) we go out and observe the first quarter moon?

At 700 PM (and if the people who show up are interested) we again do the same power point on telescope types we have done for all who are new.
Then while still inside we have a show and tell for all telescopes people have brought.
Then we talk about the features we can see on the moon.
Then we go out to look at the real moon. At about 8:45  we reminded people that the library will close at 9:00 and so if they stay later they will have to walk around the building to pack up and get to their car.

Does this work?

Please advise.
And if you make a Facebook event please share so that We can propagate it.

Thanks,
Lee Erickson

You also might want to consider 4:00pm for the presentation bit if possible. We have to do a lot of straightening up before we close and having that space full up until the last minute might be an issue.

I should have written sooner. The next time the moon will be well placed for viewing is December 30 which is a Friday.  IIRC the library closes at 5:00 PM most Fridays. Is that true for Dec 30?
I am thinking of a quick 4:30 presentation on telescopes and then we clear out and view as the library closes.
We can help everyone for whom Santa has brought a telescope try to use it on the easy target that is the moon.
Would this work for again in the children's department? And would you make an event?

Getting ahead in January a good night would be the Monday the 30th. And a 7:00 PM start time would be good.  What do you think about that too?

Please advise,

Unless it does not work for the Library I would suggest it is our default.  My bottom line motivation is to inspire future scientists and 8 and up is good.

Here is a screen shot of the sky that night.
If participants are interested we could talk about the zodiac visible, Capricornus, Aquarius, and Pisces.  I have attached a hand out which has a mnemonic for memorizing the zodiac.

If you have a Facebook or other on line event to which I could link please provide.

Chelsea,
Regarding the power point.
I was involving the librarian in hopes of stimulating interest and participation.
I can operate the equipment alone or better yet by asking a volunteer from the visitors to help me so long as that lap top with the power point is available.
Please advise.

Thanks

Thursday December 1st will be another nice quarter moon for observing.
Can we have an event that night 7-9 PM or the night before?

Please advise.

See below and share the simulated moon phase for that date.

Pete,

Regarding, "Still learning how to assemble, use and disassemble it."
Hurray! that is what we want to do together.

Just letting you on the SMAS IO group know that Chelsea confirmed the January 30 event.

Please indicate your participation.
I think we should bring a varity of telescopes and be able to tell the good and the bad about them.

Chelsea,
Regarding the power point.
I was involving the librarian in hopes of stimulating interest and participation.
I can operate the equipment alone or better yet by asking a volunteer from the visitors to help me so long as that lap top with the power point is available.
Please advise.

Thanks
Lee

4:00 PM 30 December works for me.

You also might want to consider 4:00pm for the presentation bit if possible. We have to do a lot of straightening up before we close and having that space full up until the last minute might be an issue.

We should be able to do both December 30th and January 30th! I'll see if the PR team will make events. One thing: in the future, since we only have one librarian in the evenings, they probably won't be able to run any Powerpoints since it might impede them from doing necessary work.

Beth, our head PR person, told me today that they've gotten a lot of positive feedback about these sessions! There seems to be a lot of interest from the community.

Chelsea,

Please advise,
Lee Erickson

FYI, Here is the moon that night with the Apollo 15 Landing site December 30.

And the January 30 Moon.

Re: "work out ... Children's Department? "

I think it was fine.
Ask Heather her opinion too.

Thanks,
Forrest Lee Erickson
