SMAS meeting location

James Cantu

Greeting all and happy new year!

I hope the holiday season gave you time to refresh and reconnect with family and friends. I'm sorry I could not join the gathering. Our kitty was scheduled for surgery and we unexpectedly lost her that day. She was a lap companion for many of our Zoom meetings, so I'd like to think she was an honorary member.

As we January is upon us, it is time to consider our meeting location. We have no meeting set yet in the groups.io calendar.

Pellissippi had served us well for some time, but we got shuffled around to different rooms, we lost our stored property and prices have increased. As such those members who have been attending agreed that a new venue was a completely feasible consideration.

I had put in inquiries with TVUUC as many of you know, and after much holiday phone tag, I was able to speak with them and tour. They have classrooms and meeting rooms of various size. Two options are available that fit the $30 price point. They are typical church type of classrooms. One room has a large TV and many large futon/couches (good for lounging perhaps, but maybe not the most accessible. The primary option is a small classroom that can be arranged with small 2-person tables, larger tables or even round tables. I probably accommodates 15 comfortably. It has a smaller TV for presentations with a built in computer, WiFi, and laptop connections. The catch is that a church sexton would need to be onsite. Mondays and Tuesdays a sexton is automatically onsite until after 9p. Wed are a possibility. Any other day and we would have to pay an additional $25/hour.
Evaluation:
Positive:
  • Central location with a welcoming community that expressed a desire to participate.
  • Relatively close to UTK campus for drawing in younger members.
  • Larger rooms are available if we grow, all the way up to hosting larger conferences and such.
  • Good price point
  • AV available
Negative:
  • It's change including a change of day.
  • It's not free
  • Smallish TV in the most likely room

Another option that was floated A Knox County Library
Positive
  • Free
  • Excellent space
Negative
  • Cannot conduct any financial business on library grounds. Dues would have to be managed differently and we are no longer using the PO Box.
  • Limited to open hours; might have to be a Saturday

I invite your thoughts. I may create a poll for a date selection should we change.

Best regards,
James

Forgive me I forgot to attache a couple of images. I think I had groups.io set to downscale images. If not I'll delete later to keep our space clear.

Two rooms. Large TV in room with couches. Other room with tables can be configured with different tables.

Best regards,
James

I vote for TVUUC. Would prefer Monday nights.

Hi James,

I had no idea what TVUUC stood for, so I had to look it up: Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church.
It is located at 2931 Kingston Pike.

The following directions are from the intersection of Campbell Station Road and Parkside Drive in Farragut.

The "from address" is the First Horizon Bank at this intersection.

Hope this helps.

I am feeling like we should explore working with Libraries for monthly programs to which the public is invited. I hope we can generate visibility for SMAS and for amateur astronomy in general.

We could go to something like semi annual or quarterly meetings for conducting business and by business I mean only actions requiring a vote such as for financial  and other asset management.
Straw poles about times and locations for star parties etc are informal and decision is made by the President or persons chosen by the President.

We should amend the bylaws to allow for on line business meetings and then we can be zero cost for rooms.

I was advise that the Cedar Bluff library probably had good open space around it.
Late January when we have a 1/4 moon would be a good time to try.
I have committed for 7:00 PM Monday 30 January to be at the Blount County Public library. The following night at a Knox county library would be good and I would participate (Unless run over by a bus)
Anyone use the Cedar Bluff library?

My two cent's worth.....

Last year I was very tied up and was not able to participate in SMAS activities.  I hope to be able to participate more this year and I support Lee's proposal.  I think that working with libraries is a great idea and as Lee said it would increase significantly SMAS' exposure to the public.
Happy New Year everyone!!

We have missed many meetings mainly due to the long drive from Gatlinburg. A closer venue would be appreciated. Our photo club (usually 25 members) meets for free at a library in Sevierville the first Tuesday of every month and we very seldom have any conflicts with the room. There should be a Knoxville (hopefully east) one that we should be able to use. I also agree that a library would be good for outreach benefiting them and us.

Either option, library or TVUUC, will work for me. But I think the library offers more opportunities for us to be visible to the public, and I think that's a plus. The local library here where I am in Fountain City does not have a suitable area to set up 'scopes and it is probably too far out of the way for other members to travel, especially those in the West Knoxville area.

We should amend the bylaws to allow for on line business meetings and then we can be zero cost for rooms.

I was advise that the Cedar Bluff library probably had good open space around it.
Late January when we have a 1/4 moon would be a good time to try.

Thanks for everyone's responses. Lots of good ideas and options.I think we will be looking at a significant change. Once the officers have met we will propose a meeting for the month of January. It is highly unlikely to be at the originally expected date of this coming Friday.

We'll keep you posted.

According to my note, it looks like back in around 2012, SMAS searched
for an alternative meeting location besides Pellissipi State. I
remember Jim Sanders delivered a presentation about possible
locations.
Some more options about meeting location below.

One room has a large TV and many large futon/couches (good for lounging perhaps, but maybe not the most accessible.  Other than the gathering at Olive Garden last month, I have not attended a SMAS meeting in 30 years, but when I was very active we met at the Akima Planetarium at the Knoxville Discovery Center.  Does it still exist?  Why does SMAS no longer meet there?  Just inquiring.

Thanks, Jason

To my knowledge the Discovery Center merged into what is now The Muse. I don't believe they had hours that ever seemed suitable to us 10a-4p, but who knows all options are on the table.
