Events, Meetings, and more Events

James Cantu

Greetings all,
As we begin to close out 2022 many items are in the queue.
  1. At the last meeting we discussed a Holiday gathering of some sort. Some ideas were proposed, but nothing definitive took shape. KO (Ricky and George) are offering to help gather some time between 12/14 and 12/21. They are thinking something around Bearden, early evening, perhaps 6-7pm(ish). What are your thoughts?
  2. Lee has continued to promote events at the Blount County Public Library. Lee, keep me informed and we can put these on the groups.io calendar.
  3. Dave Wells has been working on arranging events that rotate among the Knox County Library system. The earliest scheduled event would be in February and then each month we would rotate to a different branch. This could be a great opportunity for in-town participation as well as recruitment of new members. You will see events with reminders in groups.io soon.
  4. Last we are possibly looking for a new venue. This is for several reasons, one of which is costs. We have seen an increase in costs and there are simply other options. I will be making some inquiries, but be prepared for a possible change of venue.
  5. Last, we agreed to drop the USPS box. Prices for the box have risen substantially over the last couple of years (more than doubling). Bob, cancelling a PO Box is quite simple. I'll send a message separately. The address will shift to the current secretary.
Please let me know your thoughts on anything, most urgently any holiday party intentions or desires.

Best regards,
James President 2022

I would like to participate. I fear we must do what we can to rebuild the amateur
astronomical activities.
  1. Lee has continued to promote events at the Blount County Public Library. Lee, keep me informed and we can put these on the groups.io calendar.
I will be going tonight 1 December  at 7:00 and plan to do a show and tell on telescopes for Santa Clauses and then we view the Moon and planets.

We might try meeting in Libraries as public events. Presentation to public and then viewing.  First quarter moons are the best for this.

I think we should amend the constitution to create a longer term position for receiving the mail so that we do not have an ever increasing list of address changes especially for the bank account.
Please let me know your thoughts on anything, most urgently any holiday party intentions or desires.
Best regards,
James President 2022

Dave Wells

1. I would like to participate in a Holiday gathering, but I'm not available on Thursdays.

3.  I have events scheduled for Feb, March, April, and May and am waiting to hear back from the Bearden Branch for June.

4. I agree with Lee that a library would be a good location for visibility and for allowing public participation and opportunities for viewing.

Hello SMAS,

Here is what is planned for the end of the year gathering on the KO side:

We are considering getting together for a Christmas / End of the year party at the Olive Garden on Kingston Pike in Knoxville.
The party will of course be self pay and families and children are welcome. We will need an exact head count as we will
have to call ahead and most places will not seat you until everyone is there.

The leading date is Dec 19th with Dec 14th as alternative. The time will be 6:30 EST.

We will announce the date on Sunday the 4th and need an RSVP by Sunday the 11th.

George

get public attention.

Lee Erickson will participate on either day. I will check with my wife who has attended in the past so we are likly two.

Greetings all,

I was tempted to consider the library as well. After having reviewed the policies: yes we could have public events. We would be limited to library hours (we can change our time and date; I'm not worried about that), but we could not ever accept dues in person at the library. That's a strong disqualified. Otherwise, I had left a message with TVUUC. We are playing phone tag, but I'll update ASAP.

As for a gathering. I'm happy to support the KO Olive Garden event.
The Christmas get together at Olive Garden on Kingston Pike will be Monday December 19th at 6:30.
We will need a definite RSVP by Monday the 12th. Please reply to George (or to this thread).
Please let us know in a reply how many will be in your party, families with children are welcome and please remember it is self pay
I unfortunately cannot be there. I will be caring for my cat post-surgery that day.

In the future hopefully we can align all groups (KO, ORION, SMAS) as we have done in the past. David Fields, thank you as always for your offer of hospitality.

Bob Bonner

Chris and i will attend the Olive Garden dinner.

The earliest scheduled event would be in February and then each month we would rotate to a different branch. This could be a great opportunity for in-town participation as well as recruitment of new members. You will see events with reminders in groups.io soon.
  2. Last we are possibly looking for a new venue. This is for several reasons, one of which is costs. We have seen an increase in costs and there are simply other options. I will be making some inquiries, but be prepared for a possible change of venue.
We might try meeting in Libraries as public events. Presentation to public and then viewing.  First quarter moons are the best for this.
  1. Last, we agreed to drop the USPS box. Prices for the box have risen substantially over the last couple of years (more than doubling). Bob, cancelling a PO Box is quite simple. I'll send a message separately. The address will shift to the current secretary.
I think we should amend the constitution to create a longer term position for receiving the mail so that we do not have an ever increasing list of address changes especially for the bank account.
Please let me know your thoughts on anything, most urgently any holiday party intentions or desires.
Best regards,
