About SMAS Meetings

SMAS meets every second Friday January-November unless a special event interferes. In general, December is reserved for a Holiday Gathering where all local clubs are invited to dine and meetup. Meetings are relatively informal, however we usually establish an agenda of presentations and discussion topics.
Meeting are currently virtual via Zoom.
Meetings consist of short presentations by members or invited guests. Members are encouraged to propose a topic at least 1-2 weeks prior to the meeting. Please send proposals to the current Vice President. All topics are available: from technical reports, introductory topics, astrophotography, history, book/resource reviews, gear/tool reviews, how-to's, community engagement, invited speakers, etc.
We encourage diverse topics over a range of ability levels. We hope that each meeting includes something easier and something more intermediate-advanced per meeting.
Guests are welcome.

"Doors" open at 7p; Meeting runs 7:30p-9:00p

Agenda

  • Welcome and introductions (Cantu)
  • What's up with you? (anyone)
  • Solar Event Recap (Lee Erickson)
  • Lunar Eclipse Brief (Open for presenter)
  • Galaxy Season Presentation (Cantu)

May 13th meeting in person at Pellissippi

James Cantu

Greetings all,
A couple of individuals noticed that the invite showed Zoom in the Location field. The in-person aspects were updated in the body text but not there. It's been corrected since. As we elected to meet in person starting with last month nothing has changed. We will meet in person tonight.

Best regards,
James

Just a heads up. I will be showing up with my attempt at a mnemonic for remembering the distances in our solar system.
It is to be hoped we can improve upon it.

Sorry that I'll miss the in-person meeting again next week; I'll be out of town and hope to see the Lunar eclipse from New Orleans.

See a total lunar eclipse. This should be a good one, nearly overhead, and nice and large at peak eclipse.
And believe it or not lunar eclipses are less frequent than solar one.

The May 16 Lunar Eclipse and Soros Cycles

Interesting information not all of which I understand at first reading to be found here:

The Soros Cycles bear further researching I guess.

Re: Now: Call for proposals - 04/22/2022 #cal-notice

Lee I hereby appoint you to host a discussion on mnemonics for astronomical facts. I assume this will be a very short discussion.

Here is my suggestions/request for other presentations.
  • brief recap of the solar event
  • We are entering galaxy season. Would anyone like to present on such. Suggested subtopics. Types of galaxies. How to view. How to understand Surface brightness when trying to observe. Other galaxy facts.
  • any equipment or technology report. Old or new what have you used? Tell us about it.
  • Book/article reviews?
  • Current solar activity?

Please speak up soon. We are one week out. We are meeting in person. Let's make it good.

Best regards,
James

The weather forecast did not predict a good outcome for this weekend and it looks to be coming true.
Conditions are predicted to be poor for the next several days. Overcast tonight; 30-40% cloud cover tomorrow. There will probably be holes in the clouds, but seeing and transparency are also poor. I will be canceling.

Best regards,
James

Ram Bull Twins Crab Liverish, Scaily Scorpions Are Good Water Fish.
I have benefited greatly from this mnemonic because visitors at star parties would ask about their zodiacal signs and I could be knowledgeable but more importantly I know the whole sky around the ecliptic in order too.

Challenge for you all.
Develop a mnemonic for the distance to the planets in AU, (Astronomical Units ) and in order including Pluto.  I think we should also include the asteroid belt too.

Here is a reference for distance to planets but not for the asteroids.
FYI, Ceres is 2.8 AU
