Whale Rock Ducks and Red-tail Hawk question
Kaaren Perry
There seemed to be a few more duck species arrivals on the reservoir this afternoon. Seen with binoculars from the pullout on Cotton Tail Crk this afternoon. Gadwall, American Wigeon, Mallard, Cinnamon Teal, Northern Shoveler, Green-winged Teal, Northern Shoveler, Canvasback, Redhead, Ring-necked, Lesser and Greater Scaup, Bufflehead and Ruddy Duck. From that vantage the Ring-necked were the most numerous. Nice chance to review your ducks! A short ride up Turri Rd from So. Bay Blue was basically uneventful until… an interesting hawk was perched on a fence post at the seasonal ponds. It appeared to be a Red-tail but the plumage was extremely pale and caused me to stop and take a few photos before it flew off, over my car. I am wondering if it is "just one of the paler ones" or possibly might be put into a particular subspecies. The dark cheek and pale throat had me puzzled in addition to the pale belly band. Any thoughts will be appreciated. I have posted one photo from today on my flickr site. http://www.flickr.com/photos/kaarenp/ Kaaren Perry
