Stilt and Pectoral Sandpiper comparison

David Lawrence

These two rare birds at Laguna Lake (behind exceptionally bird-friendly private residences) are sharing the same very-focused spotlight, and their mutual proximity allows for good comparison.

They are at some distance (at least yesterday), and the light angle, though pretty good, isn’t up to photogenic snuff, but for comparison of bill shape and color, breast streak pattern, leg color and lengths, size, and other features, planets do align nicely.  I’m attaching images taken on 9/8, without annotation.
