Alvaros Adventures had a boat trip out of Morro Bay on July 21. The weather was mostly overcast but there was some clearing in the afternoon and the initial calm morning gave was to a moderate northwest wind during the trip. The highlights were a Horned Puffin about 6 miles offshore and two Tufted Puffins. Other birds of interest included a South Polar Skua, 1-2 Long-tailed Jaegers, and 3-4 Black-footed Albatross. Adult Sabine’s Gulls were seen during the more offshore part of the trip. We encountered good numbers of Red-necked Phalaropes and  fewer Red Phalaropes. Many Black Storm-Petrels and a few Ashy-Storm Petrels were seen with many close to the boat. Other alcids included Cassin’s Auklet, Rhino Auklet, and Common Murre. A single Black-vented Shearwater, with Pink-footed Shearwaters and many Sooty Shearwaters during the day. On the way in and out of the harbor the continuing two White-winged Scoters were present inside the harbor mouth and off the north jetty.

Sunday evening, there was at least one juvenile Western Sandpiper with many adults on the Morro Bay Sandspit. Also seen along the sandspit was a single Ruddy Turnstone and a Red Knot.
