Vaux's Swift (Chaetura vauxi) (3)
- Reported Jul 06, 2022 07:30 by Tom Edell
- Atascadero Wastewater Treatment Ponds--no internal access, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&q=35.4827588,-120.6424508&ll=35.4827588,-120.6424508

- Comments: "These birds were first seen under an overcast sky and appeared mostly dark with a brown rump and pale throat and chest. The sky cleared while we were here and our looks improved as the birds fed mostly low over and around the wastewater facility. In better light, the upper parts showed a dark back and wings, a much paler brownish rump, and a dark tail (well, at least from below). The underparts still showed a pale throat and upper chest and darker belly, and I never noted the undertails coverts. The birds stiff rapid wing beats stood out from the similar size swallows feeding in the area. The somewhat narrow wings did not look particularly long though the apparent length is rather subjective. However, the birds did look big headed. The tail was occasionally spread as the birds flew. We never heard any calls during the 20-30 minutes we watched the birds and tried to obtain photos."
