- Comments: "Spent the first hour monitoring the Opuntia patch from the Pecho Rd bridge over Islay Cr. Oriole arrived around 0715 to forage on the cactus fruit. It was very skittish and tended to flee up and over the ridge edge or across the round into cover when a car passed. Better views this trip because the cactus is more open than the dense understory around the coffee berry shrubs in the campground in Nov. Partial views of the red-orange coloration around the face, compared to the rest of the orange around the head and front (similar pattern to a hooded oriole), black throat, olive-brown back with dark flecks in a streaked pattern. Later, overlooking the the road from behind the ranch house gave distant full body views after it flushed to perch on top of a large shrub and nearby leafless trees. Large white wing patch and very apparent red tones on the face even from a more distant perch near Dune Tr parking lot. Photos"

The song was faint (so there may have been 2-3 on my walk along the bluffs). While examining sparrows I spotted one dive deeper into the grasslands from where it had been hidden along the trail. The bird’s head was peeking out. I was able to see its large bill, eyering, yellow just above eye toward bill, white crown stripe, rufous-patterned back, dark back auriculars, and buffy flanks. The bird curiously stretched its body and poked its head above the grassline several times, and even popped into the open briefly."

- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S80843924
- Media: 3 Photos
- Comments: "I saw this bird fly into the tree across from my house at the corner of Cerro Romauldo and Santa Lucia. I'm tentatively calling it a pure Red-naped Sapsucker based on the following fieldmarks.

Limited facial red extending beyond the normal boundaries of RNSA fieldmarks, though the red on the head is more extensive than might be expected in RNSA.

Two distinct vertical columns of white extending down the back of the bird, typical in RNSA.

Unmarked black in the breast, typical of RNSA. A hybrid would likely show some red.

However, the black band in the hindcrown of the bird is broken by red coloration, suggesting that there may be some RBSA blood in this bird. A typical RNSA would show a complete black band unbroken by red.

Perhaps this bird is a hyrbid, has some RBSA blood in its lineage, or just shows more wear on its feathers. Any input is very welcome."

(7)11
Adult Male
Nickname: "Big Gulp"
Flock: Big Sur
Hatched: May 20, 2013
Age: 7 Years 8 Months
Hatch Location: World Center for Birds of Prey
Release Date: October 14, 2015 (San Simeon)
Father: Number 47
Mother: Number 51
Currently Paired With: Numbers 566 and 725
Foster Offspring: Number 1004
Biological Siblings: Numbers 150, 165, 182, 191, 203, 210, 224, 227, 235, 243, 257, 280, 282, 297, 309, 319, 339, 349, 354, 378, 448, 478, 518, 572, 621, 668, 748, 780, 836, 874, 890, 940, 951, 990

Full Bio: This bird stood out in his pre-release cohort because of his entertaining feeding style. Big Gulp enjoys eating large bites of partially defrosted food, often gulping down slushy bits of meat. He is 24/7 entertainment- Oh thank heaven for 711!! Starting from the time he was released in 2015 he formed a very close friendship with resident dominant male, 566. You rarely saw one without the other, and they often cuddled and preened together. In 2019 they joined forces and paired with Pinnacles Condor #725 to form a nesting trio. They are currently raising their first chick, #1003.

(20)8
Adult Female
Nickname: "Solo"
Flock: Big Sur
Hatched: May 14, 1999
Age: 21 Years and 8 Months
Hatch Location: Los Angeles Zoo
Release Date: March 4, 2000
Father: Number 1
Mother: Number 43
Biological Offspring: 431, 530, 606, 729
Foster Offspring: 429, 621, 665
Biological Siblings: 90, 91, 140, 141, 157, 166, 202, 217, 268, 284, 290, 307, 351, 357, 373, 397, 418, 429, 470, 492, 521, 537, 565, 623, 638, 642, 652, 684, 709, 725, 727, 772, 791, 805, 815, 852, 985

Full Bio: Solo has been an explorer her entire life. She knows the Big Sur backcountry and coastline intimately and preferred to roam these remote places alone until she matured and paired with Condor #168. Her preference for isolated areas has meant that Solo can be difficult to track and that she spends a lot of time in hunting territory, which puts her in danger of feeding on carcasses killed with lead bullets. In November 2005, Solo suffered severe lead poisoning and was transferred to the Los Angeles Zoo for chelation treatment. Her life was saved thanks to intensive treatment by the highly qualified zoo staff.
In 2006, Solo paired with #168 and they spend most of their time together, even when they don't have a chick relying on their care. This couple appears to us to have the happiest "marriage" of any of our paired birds. The one tiny tension in their partnership is that Solo prefers the backcountry east of the Santa Lucia Mountains, while #168 prefers the coast south of Big Sur. In 2007, they became the first pair to lay a fertile condor egg in the wild in Monterey County in over a century (this was #431, who was deemed genetically irreplaceable and transferred to the Los Angeles Zoo). After several nesting attempts, Solo and #168 fostered Condor #665 in 2012 and, as expected, were spectacular parents!"

Hatch Location: Los Angeles Zoo
Release Date: March 4, 2000
Father: Number 1

- Comments: "Continuing bird possibly found last December coming to a feeder, and to nearby trees in hilly Morro Bay neighborhood. Relocated this year, according to a neighbor two houses down from the dead-end street of Laurel Avenue, about four weeks ago. He said he informed his neighbor (who made the original posts in December 2019 of a bright red male Summer Tanager visiting her feeder). The original spotter then located the bird (see multiple eBird reports of bird in her yard, at her suet feeder, and in tree across street) and began posting on eBird. We arrived, planning to stay in the dead-end street area on Laurel Avenue from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. After not spotting the bird by then (we were joined at this time by Mike Bush, while two other birders came and went), we decided to wait until 12:30 p.m. to call off our search. Our search included observing eucalyptus trees, as well as scanning area yard trees, and peeking at an avocado tree in a backyard that we could spot between homes. Close to 12:30 p.m., Mike Bush, Jane Hawley and I spotted the bird fly into the lower portion of a eucalyptus tree down the hill. A neighbor soon informed us that he could see the bird from his backyard behind the avocado tree in his yard (he was very polite and informed us that he’d been searching an hour already earlier in the day for the tanager). We were soon able to gain a view of the bird, observe some of its foraging behaviors, and obtain views of its bright plumage. The bird is rosy red except for whitish splotches (leusistic?) on the right side of its neck, as well as a larger whitish patch on its right rear flank that bled some over to its belly. I noticed in a video I took of the bird that the low white patch fluffed out from its side more than its opposite flank when caught in the wind. The bird was eating some kind of larvae it was finding on tree branches. At one point it had two larvae lined up on a branch, chewed one, swallowed it, then picked up the other, chewed that, swallowed, then wiped both sides of its bill clean on the branch it was on. I’m still learning so much about bird feeding behaviors and found the tanager’s behavior interesting and methodical. In a second video on another branch, the bird also wiped both sides of its bill onto a branch after chewing/squishing a larvae. The bird was observed feeding atop a bush/tree and on a eucalyptus branch. I’m uncertain whether this bird is an Eastern or Western subspecies, though the various angles of the photos I’ve uploaded may help others in determining."

- Comments: "Continuing hummingbird. Kai Mills heard its rising/falling thin szeee-eeeeew song as soon as we parked adjacent to the park. I soon heard vocalizations as well. We then spotted what might have been a male Costa’s, though lost sight of that bird without pics. We then located a female in a tree across the street. She had a downcurved bill, long wings extending beyond her tail, and bits of purple on her throat. She flew into neighborhood bushes, foraged, then flew into a bush and landed on a small, greyish nest that appeared to be woven from bits of silk and other organic materials, including tiny sections of leaves and plant material. She sat on the nest for a few minutes before foraging again and returning. She vocalized often making dry, bubbly tink-tink-tink sounds. When the Hampl brothers arrived we pointed them to the nest, and later also directed Mike Bush to the nest via a phone call. While still in the area a second Costa’s (female or juvenile male) was spotted vocalizing while the female was in her nest."

Found 1/2 way between the Cypress Street Bridge and ocean. There is a pile of rocks that comes
down to the water on the campground side of the creek. It was with group of 2 male Surf Scooters, Buffleheads, and American Coots. When preening it turned completely on its back to work on belly feathers. After preening it tucked up and floated with a group of 5 Bufflehead. Later, on our return, we observed it swimming in the same area.
