Indigo Bunting (Passerina cyanea) (1) CONFIRMED
- Reported May 18, 2020 10:00 by Carolyn Krueger
- Quintana Road, Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&;t=p&z=13&q=35.3629761,-120.8176387&ll=35.3629761,-120.8176387
- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S69280122
- Comments: "Breeding male perched on a high power line next to the road. Both my husband and I observed through binoculars an all-blue bird, with the head a slightly darker blue. The beak looked light (not black) and the shape indicated to me that the bird was either a bunting or a grosbeak. The size and shape of the bird also made me suspect either of those two. I did not hear it sing. I consulted Merlin and All About Birds for photos of grosbeaks and buntings. As the bird appeared all blue, Lazuli Bunting and Blue Grosbeak were ruled out. We did not see any rufous coloring to indicate the Blue Grosbeak, and body, head and beak shape seemed not to match that species either. Descriptions of habitat and behavior for the Indigo Bunting matched what we observed. Ultimately, this identification amounts to a best, albeit unlikely, guess."

White-eyed Vireo (Vireo griseus) (1) CONFIRMED
- Reported May 19, 2020 08:36 by Tom Edell
- San Luis Drive, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&;t=p&z=13&q=35.2863266,-120.6513191&ll=35.2863266,-120.6513191

- Comments: "Eric Wier called me about this bird which he had just found in his yard. Chris and I arrive at his house and heard a vireo like song as we exited the car. Unfortunately, I did not have time to record the song. Once in Eric and Laura’s backyard, we scanned the oaks for the bird. It was very uncooperative staying buried in the interior of the coast live oaks and mostly allowing only partial views. When in full view it was still in the interior of the trees. The bird was constantly “lost”, presumably as it gleaned in dense oak leaves without noticeably moving leaves. Greg Smith arrived about halfway through the time I was here.
I never managed to get a good photo of the bird, though Eric managed to get a couple of photos and did record the song. My views of the bird were all partial, I was able to see the white iris and dark pupil a couple of times along with the yellow spectacles and yellow sides and flanks. But the bird was never in view long enough to study it and was mostly shaded when seen. I never got a good look at the wings, bill, back or tail. It was unfortunate that the few times it was in the open, I was trying to photograph it and having trouble locating it in my view finder. I can say that it had yellow sides that faded to a pale central breast. The one poor photo I got shows the pale iris, yellow spectacles continuing over the bill, a gray nape, and pale throat. That combination of features should eliminate other likely vireos from consideration. Poor photo"

- Comments: "Adult deep blue male, previously found and described. It was singing and was seen on the left side of the Quintana (coming from Morro Bay), in a large pine near Highway 1, in coastal scrub, nearby wires, and on a scrawny Christmas tree looking tree. This was roughly even with the dirt road that goes of into the farm fields to the right. This dirt road is about 1/2 mile from South Bay Blvd. The Indigo was chasing the Lazuli Bunting male around."

Indigo Bunting (Passerina cyanea) (1)

- Comments: "Other birders had spotted this bird yesterday and today before we arrived. We spoke to a birder who said to watch the scrub bushes on the east side of the street and powerlines just north of the vet clinic. We waited about ten minutes, scanning. Finally I played the birdsong from my iPhone. The bird flew out from the brush onto a wire. It flew across the street into brush for a better view, then northeastward across the road into mustard plants. Eventually it flew into some trees a bit further north along the east side of the road, which is where I recorded birdsong. It then flew north again into the next set of trees and was eyed by a kestrel that was perched on a powerline. The kestrel flew northward. Indigo was a breeding male, entirely blue, head darker than body. Light-colored bill. Singing and calling at times. Tried to find the bird again. Didn’t hear or see it."

Indigo Bunting (Passerina cyanea) (1) CONFIRMED
- Reported May 21, 2020 09:15 by Carolyn Krueger
- Quintana Road, Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&;t=p&z=13&q=35.3629761,-120.8176387&ll=35.3629761,-120.8176387
- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S69425921
- Comments: "Continuing breeding male. Today’s observations were the most extensive of the past 4 days. He perched several times in clear view on the usual power lines, on tops of shrubs and trees and on top of a power pole. All in the usual vicinity, mostly on the north side of Quintana. I observed him for some minutes as he sang atop the power pole, shifting his facing several times affording excellent views of him from every angle. I heard straight songs, songs with calls, and calls alone. He was very vocal—so quite easy to find when he changed perches. At my first sighting of him, he appeared to be keeping company with a female bunting. This was corroborated by another birder on the scene. I believe nesting activity is happening, with the focus of activity in the area behind the mustard plants which I have mentioned in all my reports. As this is my daily walk, I will continue to look for signs of a partner and nesting activity."

The small group of birders followed him while he moved deliberately from tree to tree, while taking brief stops to glean. Yellow throat and upper breast contrasted with white belly. Black streaks were seen on the sides. Black face patch was bordered above by a white supercillium. Bill was longer than our more common warblers."

- Comments: "This bird was first located on Sunday May 24th by Mariela Martinez. I identified the bird from photographs as a Laughing gull. Today the (obviously) same bird was found at Arroyo Grande creek lagoon. Seeing this bird in the flesh it presented as quite confusing. The obvious field mark not inline with LAGU were the large white eye crescents, indicative of FRGU. However the white spotting on the black primaries did not appear large enough for an adult FRGU. The size was more inline with nonbreeding LAGU. The bill appeared long and droopy in one of the original photos and lent itself towards LAGU. In hindsight the length and shape of the bill was an artifact of the bird's angle in the photo. The bill was a maroon/deep red with a blackish wash to the tip, inline with LAGU. The bill was not drooped and smaller than first thought. The bird showed a very, VERY faint pinkish wash on the breast, inline with FRGU. Jeff Smith, Norm Pilsbury and myself settled on a second winter bird molting into alternate. This age class seems to satisfy all the discrepancies."

As I walked slowly up the road a small warbler darted into the poison oak brush about 2 feet off the ground along the side of the road in front of me. I saw a greenish back, no wing bars and a flash of yellow. Immediately after disappearing the bird began to sing loudly from the dense location. The song was repeated in a series of 4-5 cheweee, cheweee, sections first right in front of me and while remaining deep in the brush moved along down the trail. During this time it continuing to sing loudly. Hoping to get a photo but I was unable to view the bird despite its close location. At the time a few birders had joined me and also heard and identified the species from that location. The bird was soon refound by song in the brush above the the parking lot. Despite the loud singing no one present at that time was able to actually view the bird."

I saw a small yellow bird fly across the road and then recorded the rather loud song when it sang a couple more times (1150 hours). Bill Bouton arrived and after listening for more songs, we started up the road to look for the other birders. Bill decided to stay where the bird had been singing and I continued up the road. Just before I got to the campsites on the west side of the creek, I heard the bird sing again. This was about 0.5 mile up the canyon. I crossed the creek and walked back along the west side to where the bird was and recorded its song again (1206 hours). It again stopped singing and after being joined by Jeff Miller, Norm Pillsbury, and others, we heard the Will Knowlton had the bird singing back down the canyon where I originally heard it. Buy the time we got there, the bird was in the parking area and I recorded it again at 1232 hours. Here I managed to also get a brief view of the bird, but only enough to say that it was green above, yellow below and had a black face pattern that extended into the lores and down the side of the face. I did not note any black on the crown or the bill or leg colors. I can say that I saw no wingbars. The bird kept low in the vegetation and was chased a few times by a male MacGillivray’s Warbler. I was told later that the bird was found again up canyon at Campsite 2. Photos were taken by others present."

Saw only fleeting glimpses, mostly of the olive upper parts and just enough of the face to make out the black and yellow pattern. Distinctive wide yellow spectacles tapering back behind the eye, black below eye on cheek tapering down side of breast. The drizzly gray conditions, dense willow and poison oak made the bird impossibly difficult to see, even when it sang loudly from the creek bed or slope. It spent some time on the north side of the road, but mostly moved between campsites 2 and 9 along the creek. Seen, photographed and recorded by many earlier in the day."
