Brewer's Sparrow and LA Birders Webinar: Female Hummingbirds

Tom Edell

The Brewers Sparrow continued at Cloisters Park in Morro Bay today. As usual, it was seen in the area between the paved path along the north side of the park and the fence line separating the backyard of several homes, some that have seed feeders.

On another note, I am forwarding an announcement for those of you that have not heard about the LA Birders Webinars. The webinars are well done and packed with useful information. Past webinars are available for viewing on the website.

For those still mystified by female hummingbirds, you will find the most recent webinar valuable. It gives tips on how to separate females. Try taking the before and after photo test to see what you learned. And please note that the program points out that female Rufous and Allen’s are inseparable, even by call.

Subject: [CALBIRDS] LA Birders Webinar: Female Hummingbirds

Hello birders,

You are invited to join Los Angeles Birders for this first installment of our new webinar series, “Slashes, sp.’s, and Identification (or not)” :

Identification of Female Hummingbirds in the Los Angeles Area

Dessi Sieburth

Tue, Jan 19, 2021 7:00 PM

As any birder knows, female hummingbirds present a difficult identification challenge. Join Dessi Sieburth as he discusses the identification of the six hummingbird species that regularly occur in Los Angeles County. We will review status and distribution as well as key field marks of each species. This program will conclude with a fun, interactive quiz on the member-only Zoom platform -- though livestream viewers will be able to see and hear the quiz clues, they won’t be able to participate in the live polling functionality.

CONNECTION INFORMATION: A link to the webinar livestream will be posted on our website at 6:55pm, five minutes before the webinar start time. If you are unable to attend, this webinar *will* be recorded and made available on our website for later (or repeat) viewing.

BECOME A MEMBER! Though our webinars will always remain free and available to all, members of Los Angeles Birders have access to live webinars via Zoom, allowing for more interactivity with presenters -- and the ability to participate in quizzes. Members also receive priority sign-up for LAB events and will receive discounts on paid LAB programs in the future. To learn more about membership, please see our website!
