Sweet Springs intergeneric hybrid update. 🎉
Kaaren Perry
Hello fellow birders,
Well our little Dark-eyed Junco X White-crowned Sparrow has been reviewed by ebird/Cornell teams and has now been officially added to the ebird/Clements taxonomy checklist as of Fall, 2022. You may recall that this interesting bird was first discovered and photographed by me at Sweet Springs on February 4, 2022. Many others have viewed and photographed this bird over the following months with the most recent report being sent to me on November 18, 2022. So yes, it is still there! If you have not previously entered an ebird report for this bird it is now time! On your ebird checklist enter Dark-eyed Junco X White-crowned Sparrow under + add species. It will accept this entry, indicate rarity and ask for details. Tom Edell will be sending out a message to those who previously entered the sighting as sparrow sp. for some directions on how to rename the sparrow sp. to Dark-eyed Junco X White-crowned Sparrow on your lists. It will not happen automatically and a change species option will be required. Thanks to all who have submitted supports, identification analysis and photos of this rarity over the past several months. This has definitely been an exciting and informative birding adventure!
