Interesting, I had between 90 - 100 Greater White-fronted Geese flying over my backyard in eastern Los Osos heading east from the MB estuary towards Laguna Lake @ 5:45pm…

We seem to be finding a whole lot of GWFG flying through our county in the past 24 hours when we look at the reports ! No timing of reports seems to indicate recounting, different locations etc. Can't be the same flock???.  Back to the study of GWFG migration patterns. We may be adding to the study here right here in SLO county!   FUN!

Definitely interesting!  Another migration mystery or does someone out there have a possible researched explanation of migration patterns?

Adding to the Greater White-front festivities......at dusk on Monday the 10th, with the fog hanging over Deer Canyon and the Great Horned Owls calling, a flock of what sounded like 30+ Greater White-fronts went by Deer Canyon going west.  Yesterday (11th) afternoon at 5:15 another or the same flock (approx. 40 birds) went by just over the ridge top on a northerly course.

As to the question of whether these are all different flocks or the same birds, I don't know.  I do think, however, that it seems like at least one large (100+) group may be lurking in the area, possibly splitting and then reforming as they move around exploring the feeding and roosting options.  The fact that a flock of about 40 appears overhead on the 10th, shows over Laguna Lake mid-day on the 11th (Nancy Mann's report), then here at Deer Canyon the 11th in the evening going north and obviously exploring the area, makes me think a group static in the area for a few days seems likely.

White-fronts are popping up all over coastal Santa Barbara County right now, and the same effect may be going on there.

Or not.
