Calif Quail in Morro Bay yard
Rosalie Valvo
Yesterday, as I walked in Morro Bay to and from the post office, I saw lots of activity with the small birds, juncos and such. Very entertaining. But on my way home, I spotted a larger bird, a California Quail male, in a landscaped area in front of the condos at Shasta and Marina. I looked around for a female but saw none. I continued on, and a moment later Marlin and Connie Harms, who live nearby on Estereo, stopped their car to talk to me. I told them about the quail. They said that they’ve never seen a quail around the neighborhood in all the years they’ve lived there. I, too, have never seen a quail in the neighborhoods in all my years here. Quail families up on Black Hill, yes, but never in the populated areas.
So is my experience extraordinary? Are quails in the neighborhoods more common than Marlin and Connie and I have noticed?

We definitely get California Quail in my neighborhood in Baywood close to the estuary. In fact we had our first ones for the year this week, two males and a female. Last spring they had two clutches of baby quail under a big lupine next to our house. Chris Van Beveren Beck Travel 565 Baywood Way Los Osos CA 93402 Phone: 805 439-2023 becktravel@... Well not a CA Quail however… Wild Turkeys #10 just arrived and perched on our neighbors roof. Neighbors have lived there for many years and this was the first time they have seen turkeys, on their roof or for that matter in the area. We live not too far from where Rosalie spotted the Quail yesterday… never seen those in our neighborhood either. What's up with that??

We live relatively near the MB SP golf course where both species are relatively common there but these are both new for our neighborhood, in just 2 days. Location, location? Turkey or not…. Yard bird 158 :-) Kaaren Perry Morro Bay

I just saw the exact same scene, at the same site as yesterday’s quail. There were quite a few (20-30?) spread across two roofs. This is several blocks from Kaaren’s house.
