Black Tern (Chlidonias niger) (1) CONFIRMED
- Reported Aug 19, 2020 07:00 by Robert Chapman
- Oceano Dunes SVRA, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&;t=p&z=13&q=35.0657368,-120.6275693&ll=35.0657368,-120.6275693
- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S72602405
- Comments: "Traveling north along shore just north of Arroyo Grande creek mouth I observed a medium sized tern flying down the shore right towards me just to my left. The bird had deep, lazy wingbeats, flying just 5 or so feet above the ground right along the water line. The bird passed within 20 feet of my vehicle. Black bill, black crown and nape with a falcon like black tear drop on side of face, dark wings and back, short dark tail. Throat, breast and belly white. Most probably a nonbreeding adult but not certain. Bird continued south out of view."

Black Tern (Chlidonias niger) (1) CONFIRMED
- Reported Aug 19, 2020 17:45 by Tom Slater
- Oso Flaco Lake (not for beach/ocean), San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&;t=p&z=13&q=35.0302072,-120.6207848&ll=35.0302072,-120.6207848

- Comments: "very small tern, black head strap/earmuffs, gray upper wings and tail, darker wings underneath, white body, underwings were black but lighter in the center, black spur coming down from wings onto body, sharp wings, swept back. Flying erratically low over lake, never plunge diving. Picking food off lake (I assume small fish)."

Indigo Bunting (Passerina cyanea) (1)
- Reported Aug 19, 2020 08:55 by Nick Belardes
- San Simeon SP, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&;t=p&z=13&q=35.5968718,-121.1235286&ll=35.5968718,-121.1235286
- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S72591797
- Media: 1 Audio
- Comments: "Cinnamon-colored juvenile with faint wingbars. Lighter brown on chest. Pale throat. I thought it was a Lazuli Bunting juvenile but after analyzing the flight calls, it sounds like an Indigo. No photo. Was a bit distant as I observed from road bridge over creek (where boardwalk deadends east from Highway One parking lot). Bird was on south side of creek hoping between branches making what might be begging sounds. It eventually flew north across the creek following a goldfinch. Will upload sound this evening."

- Comments: "The 1st black tern was reported Wed. Aug. 19. Seen for several days. Nobody reported it today, but a Black Tern was reported a few miles south. My impression from the field is that this bird's spur is lighter, and has a bigger amount of white on its forehead. However, my views of the 1st bird were at sunset/after sunset and today it was full sun. So it may be the same bird. I have one digiscoped photo I'll post."

Her photo was not definitive and appeared to be a possible BASA due to the strikingly patterned back, but she insisted the bird had bright yellow legs. I relocated the bird and it did in fact have bright yellow legs and a strikingly patterned back; juvenile BBSA. Buffy colored, bright yellow legs, longish neck, longish legs, longish bodied, a bit larger than a BASA. The head was slightly bulbous and the back very patterned. (photo by Shanna Bedesem"

Didn’t spot an eyering—though bird was high and constantly moving. Didn’t get the head pattern memorized. Watched bird forage in deciduous tree north of CASA DIABLO house (North end of park, a few trees north of feeders where water crosses path). Watched bird forage and fly to a few trees, catching up with it each time. Recorded chip calls. More on behavior: It flitted from small branch to small branch, staying stationary for only brief spells. Kind of like a Wilson’s. It flitted mostly on outside branches, but also went to internal branches briefly."
