Hi Carol

I just love the way you are keeping us all informed.  This is great use of slocobirding.  Judy Neuhauser, Freddy Howell and I recently presented a program on birds of the estuary for John Sanders' Delfinia Environmental youth camp and one of our segments was on migration… featuring Dozer. Migration map, photos etc. Great fun and the youngsters were fascinated.

Thank you!

UPDATE:  I did not look at Mimi's coordinates correctly. She is in the agricultural fields just east of the Salton Sea. This may be her overwintering grounds. Will be fun to see what happens.

Thanks for the great response so far. There are spaces for 7 LB Curlew data checkers. So far 3 people have expressed interest. The bird you monitor could over winter anywhere in the west. Dozer and Neil (died this spring) were the only 2 known to over winter on the Central Coast.

Mimi, Dozer's mate, left their breeding grounds in Indian Valley. She started moving south on June 14 and is currently in Nevada. In early June Heather Hayes (with the Intermountain Bird Observatory) found one egg that looked like a predator had gotten to it. Heather recently received a call from a rancher in the area who reported seeing an adult with two young birds. So, there is hope that perhaps Dozer and Mimi had some nesting success. As a reminder, Petra Clayton first encountered Dozer on Morro Strand Beach on June 21, 2020.

Heather is looking for more curlew trackers. The job is easy! Once or twice a week you check the Movebank data site to make sure your bird's transmitter is working. It takes about 10 minutes. If  for some reason, you are unable to check the data, you just let the team know so they can check for that time. If you are interested in helping, please let me know and I can put you in touch with Heather.

Mew Gull (Larus canus) (1) CONFIRMED

- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S90280991
- Media: 1 Photo
- Comments: "One year old bird loafing with mixed California Gull and Western Gull flock at the lagoon. I initially passed over this bird because it looked very similar to a year old California Gull, but on second look with a scope the smaller size and smaller thin bill in comparison to the California Gulls was obvious. In addition to the size and shape of the bill it was dark toward the tip and pale toward the base. The wings was bleached and worn with white wing panels, dark primaries, a gray back, and white head and underparts. I did not note the leg color though the one poor distant photo I took from the parking lot shows they are pink. I intended walk down onto the beach to photograph the bird but the flock flushed and it flew north with a couple of year old California Gulls."

Hummingbirds 6.13.21

Cheryl Lish

Feeding activity has increased early this year
Has been at about 3 qts per day this past week, now at about a gallon per day

Confirmed a Costa’s today. Have been thinking I heard one the past 2 days but couldn’t get eyes on it. Believe it’s a juvenile male but will try to get a better look tomorrow.
Some of the hummingbird’s water is being consumed by Hooded Orioles too.

Least Bittern at Oceano County Park

AJSearcy

Hello all,

A singing LEAST BITTERN was present early this afternoon on the small vegetated island at Oceano County Park. I could hear it best from the Air Park Dr. bridge (especially during breaks in traffic on nearby roads) but was never able to see the bird. Another birder reported seeing the continuing American Redstart in the state campground but it was not singing/obvious when I wandered through at the ideal birdwatching time of ~1230 pm. I saw plenty of local breeders but no lingering/late migrants.

Cheers,
Adam Searcy
