Re: Gull
Alvaro Jaramillo
Bob The interior and northern albertaensis California Gull is theoretically common on the West Coast during the non-breeding season based on banding evidence. The issue is that most individuals are not field separable from the nominate California Gull. On average, albertaensis is larger and paler. The size is perhaps the most reliable feature. Some individuals stand out in flocks in coastal California, but my guess is that the large majority of albertaensis are stealth migrants, totally undetected and undetectable. No clear evidence of wing pattern features exist, but some have thought that albertaensis may be more likely to have an entirely white tip to P10. Maybe, maybe not. Alvaro

Yesterday I came upon a gull that was a head scratcher. Superficially aligned with California Gull but not quite right; larger, lighter mantle (approaching Herring Gull), bill larger with the gondyle angle more severe. After input from several folks I believe it to be L c. albertaensis, the Northern Great Plains subspecies. I don't have any experience with this race so let me know if you do.
The first Black-vented Shearwater showed up yesterday in South Oso Flaco and today I have seen several more.
Elegant Terns are MIA at OD this summer but today there are a couple dozen present. Oceano Dunes

Snowy Egret and Little Blue Heron - juvenile identification
Kaaren Perry
While a Little Blue Heron is definitely considered a rarity in SLOCounty there is always the possibility that one just might show up any time! The last report was from Pismo Creek mouth in November 2019, one in June 2018 at Arroyo Grande Creek mouth and a very few earlier records that I found from 1988 and 2005 in May-August.
The adult plumaged of either species are fairly easy to recognize but the juveniles can be very difficult and often misidentified. Just in case, some time in the future, you find yourself faced with this challenge I am forwarding a very well constructed summary of how to separate the two species when in juvenile plumage. Thanks to Ryan Winkleman for posting this to the Orange County Birding for further discussion, reference and distribution. Let's go find one!! Shorebirds
Bob Chapman
Finishing up the week at OD;
Wilson's and Red-necked Phalaropes continued though in smaller numbers. Ruddy Turnstone on Thursday (new). Also on Thursday was the first juvenile Western Sandpiper but there were several on Friday. Also on Friday was the first juvenile Semi-palmated Plover. At least one possibly two (moving around?) Red Knot(s) on Friday. Several Dowitchers, didn't have time to pick them apart but a possible "Prairie" Short-billed. And a juvenile Willet with a down-curved bill and subtlety different jizz inspired me to send a photo to Tom, but western race, not eastern. Bob Chapman Oceano Dunes

Oso Flaco birds

The lake was fairly quiet. Ducks in very small numbers. One rednecked phalarope and just one Least Tern. At the beach several semi palmated plovers, many western sandpipers and one Wilson’s phalarope. Two large gull flocks on the beaches. One all Heermans, the other a mixed flock of assorted typical gulls. One Royal tern.

Greater Roadrunner
Peggy
So excited to share the mating success of my resident Greater Roadrunners. I saw a pair mating on March 19th this year (right outside my kitchen window!) Then today I finally saw a juvenile GRRO with an adult. The juvenile is about 3/4 size of the adult. Not sure how many young they had as I have not seen a nest, just roaming GRROs in my yard. Here is a spotty picture of the pair. Few people would understand my excitement, but I knew you all would. :)

I think it shows 1 eclipsed male , 2 females and 2 juveniles. I'd like feedback if needed. This is the first eBird report of this species at Villa Creek. Sweet Springs Preserve Breeding Bird surveys 2020. Wrap up.
Kaaren Perry
For the seventh consecutive breeding season our team of trained MCAS volunteers have completed the annual MCAS Sweet Springs Preserve Breeding Bird surveys. Our teams monitor the abundance and breeding status of the birds present in two-week intervals from early March through June 2020. As you will read in the summary, the main objective of the study is to provide a long-term standardized record of the numbers and types of birds that use the coastal preserve for nesting and rearing.
I encourage you to take a little time to join us as we learn more about our resident and migrant spring breeders by viewing the annual report. Even if you only occasionally or are just planning a visit to Sweet Springs, I do think you might find this report of interest. The summary and some fun photos can be found at found on the Morro Coast Audubon web pg at: https://www.morrocoastaudubon.org/2020/07/sweet-springs-breeding-bird-survey.html. Once there then click on annual report. Sincere thanks to those dedicated survey participants who contributed their time and talents to another successful breeding bird survey season: Joanne Aasen, Bart Beckman, Karen Beckman, Jay Carroll, Wendy McKeown, Judy Neuhauser, Kaaren Perry, Max Taylor. Very special recognition to Jay Carroll who compiles the survey data collected at each survey, puts together all the relative comparisons from past years and presents it to us in a comprehensive, understandable and enjoyable summary document. This project definitely takes a village! 8th Sweet Springs breeding survey season will begin in early March 2021. Kaaren Perry : Project Manager Jay Carroll : Data Compiler

Lesser Yellowlegs - Turri Rd. Ponds
Kaaren Perry
A brief stop at the first pond east of South Bay Rd. this morning had a few surprises. 2 juvenile Lesser Yellowlegs and a Wilson's Phalarope were actively feeding with 5 Greater Yellowlegs. No other shore birds were present at the time. The mixed flock was observed for about 5 minutes before all flew off, heading west. Flight calls of both yellowlegs species was heard.
