Kentucky Warbler at Cerro Alto

Eric Wier

This morning at about 9:00 A.M. Laura Frank and I found a singing KENTUCKY WARBLER in the lower part of the Cerro Alto campground.  The bird perched in trees 8 to 20 feet high for a minute or so while it sang, and then would move to a new location nearby and sing again.  We lost track of its location at about 9:30.  Closer to noon the bird was re-found by others in the parking area by Highway 41.  At this location the Kentucky warbler also sang, and a MacGillivray’s warbler was seen chasing the Kentucky.

We were able to get a few photos for documentation and a recording with a cellphone. Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S69810529

- Comments: "This bird was first located on Sunday May 24th by Mariela Martinez. I identified the bird from photographs as a Laughing gull. Today the (obviously) same bird was found at Arroyo Grande creek lagoon. Seeing this bird in the flesh it presented as quite confusing. The obvious field mark not inline with LAGU were the large white eye crescents, indicative of FRGU. However the white spotting on the black primaries did not appear large enough for an adult FRGU. The size was more inline with nonbreeding LAGU. The bill appeared long and droopy in one of the original photos and lent itself towards LAGU. In hindsight the length and shape of the bill was an artifact of the bird's angle in the photo. The bill was a maroon/deep red with a blackish wash to the tip, inline with LAGU. The bill was not drooped and smaller than first thought. The bird showed a very, VERY faint pinkish wash on the breast, inline with FRGU. Jeff Smith, Norm Pilsbury and myself settled on a second winter bird molting into alternate. This age class seems to satisfy all the discrepancies."

Indigo Bunting; no YT Warbler, no Hooded Warbler.

Rubba Johanna

Investigated Los Osos Community Park around 8:30 this morning and again around 2 pm. No sign of the Yellow-Throated Warbler in any of the perimeter vegetation. Zoomed over to Quintana Rd. and visited with the Indigo Bunting, who was very bright blue in the afternoon sun. But he quickly vanished and stopped singing, though I hung around for another half hour.

Along the way, heard and then spotted two Red-tailed Hawks calling and soaring around each other over the State Park Golf Course.

Checked out the Turri ponds on the way back and saw only a Killdeer.

Gave Pacific Beach High School a try for the Hooded Warbler, but all was quiet. I heard an American Robin singing in the neighborhood behind the school.

Not much of a birding day, but it was nice to get out in the sunshine and breeze.

Intergrade Flicker, Cerro Alto Campground, 5/27

Tom Edell

I walked the road to the campground this morning. Lots of singing birds, though fewer than my last visit. The most interesting bird I saw was an intergrade Red-shafted x Yellow-shafted Flicker. I used to think that all intergrades were only here in winter and that they arrived from the contact zones between these two forms. A male present at the campground this morning is the first county record for an intergrade in May (breeding season). It’s worth taking a close look at the head, face and throat color, the color of the mustache, and for red nape markings (sometimes faint) on all Red-shafted Flickers regardless of the time of year.

The small group of birders followed him while he moved deliberately from tree to tree, while taking brief stops to glean. Yellow throat and upper breast contrasted with white belly. Black streaks were seen on the sides. Black face patch was bordered above by a white supercillium. Bill was longer than our more common warblers."

Say's Phoebe, Cloisters Park, 5/25

Tom Edell

Yesterday morning I walked the trails at the Cloisters development. I was surprised to find a Say’s Phoebe there as this species is typically absent from the SLO County coast after mid-Mar and before the end of Aug (breeding season). This is the second report this spring, the other at Whale Rock Reservoir.

Looking at eBird, there are quite a few records of coastal birds during the breeding season without details or a photo. Always good to document any coastal record during the breeding season with a description and/or a photo.

This sounds like a warbler. Yellow Warbler heard earlier, but this sounds different. Any ideas?

Yellow-throated Warbler Hotspot, Los Osos, 5/25

Tom Edell

This is an eBird related post. If you don’t use eBird no need to read further.

I created a hotspot for the Yellow-throated Warbler that was found this morning at the Los Osos Community Park. If you have already entered this bird in eBird, please merge/change your location to the Yellow-throated Warbler Stakeout – Los Osos Community Park” hotspot. This will help consolidate all of the records into this one easy to search hotspot and avoid location clutter at the park. Once the bird leaves, the name will change to “Los Osos Community Park”.

As for the Yellow-throated Warbler, the completely white supercilum indicates this bird is of the most western subspecies albilora, which is the more expected subspecies in California.

Thanks for your help….Tom

Hi -

The bird was still active and singing when I left at 10:45am.

Photos can be seen on my Flickr page.

Thank you Jim Royer for finding this rare bird, and to Tom for sending out the SLOCOBIRDING note.

Great to see so many birders out and on the bird!
