Geese and Snipe!

Kaaren Perry

This afternoon, following a tip  from my friend Vicky Johnsen that there were a few interesting geese nearby, I headed to the “little pond/puddle’ on Foothill Rd just before the intersection of Los Osos Valley Rd in San Luis Obispo.

Sure enough! Along with 16 Canada Geese there were two adult Ross’s Geese and one immature Snow Goose grazing in the field.  While they are plentiful in other parts of the state it is always a treat to find them in SLO County. (photos up on flickr)

In a near by puddle there were 5 (!) Wilson’s Snipe.  Talk about a treat!

Seen at 5:30.  Nice way to enjoy the sunset hour.

More gull reports from north coast

Kaaren Perry

This morning I took a drive from Morro Bay up the north coast to see what gulls I might see at the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal overlook and a few other ocean view pullouts along the way.

From the Elephant Seal boardwalk there were several species of gulls seen including Western, California, Glaucous-winged, Herring, Ring-billed and a striking almost pure white 1st winter Glaucous Gull.  The Glaucous Gull may have been the very best/closest encounter I have ever had.

Six gull species while standing in one spot!   Various ages were represented and I didn’t even need my scope!  The morning high tide may have helped bring them in closer to view.

I have put a few photos up on flickr from today.

Glaucous Gull, Arroyo Laguna, 23 Feb

Tom Edell

This morning I checked Arroyo Laguna. The gull flock held a single first-winter Glaucous Gull that was not the mostly white individual being seen at the Point Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery. With it was a bird I’m tentatively calling a Herring x Glaucous Gull hybrid, possibly the same bird Petra and Jack Clayton photographed at the Pt. Piedras Blancas rookery yesterday. The rest of the flock included 47 Herring Gulls (my personal high count this winter), two Thayer’s Gulls (adult and first-winter), nine Glaucous-winged Gulls, and California and Western Gulls. A single Brant continued on the beach and a lone Common Goldeneye was in the lagoon.

The Spotted Towhee is somewhere in the middle, will venture out into the open but doesn't stay there for long. The GTTO is the most skittish and secretive of the three and stays under or extremely close to cover and appears very averse to being out in the open ."

Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

mike stiles

I was able to find the continuing sapsucker at Cuesta College this morning, in the north west corner of the campus. It was very mobile and visited many trees in the area in a short amount of time. I was able to photograph it in the large Casuarina tree with many sapsucker drillings.
