- Comments: "I’d been seeing sparrows flit through the tall grasses on the saddle area of South Hills Open Space off Exposition Drive trailhead. Had only chased a few to no avail. This time I went just before sunset. A bird leapt from the grass along the trail. It stopped in a break in the grass and I got a clear look at the white eyering, yellow arc patch on supraloral. Streaked wings. Buffy sides. Appeared to be an adult. I followed bird as it hopped through the grasses and stood on a low rock. Got another clear profile view. Wasn’t quick enough with iPhone/binoc photo. Bird flew a few dozen yards away into deep grasses. Looked up Grasshopper Sparrows seen in SLO County. Bird matched. Excited to try to find another soon."

MDO Ancient Murrelet, etc.

Jim Royer

This morning I scoped for 2 1/2 hours from the bluffs to the north of Spooner’s Cove (from an Overlook off the Dune Trail). There was a moderate onshore breeze when I started. I saw one Ancient Murrelet fly by, a Parasitic Jaeger fly around offshore for awhile, and 2 Common Murres shot by. The rest of my sightings can by found at

Long-tailed Duck, Morro Bay

Tom Edell

Just an FYI, that the Long-tailed Duck currently in the Morro Bay Harbor Mouth area is a male. The last photo taken on December 19th (distant)  showed a bird with an all dark bill, a clear dark cheek patch, and no white in the scapulars. The bird photographed there yesterday and today has a pink bill with a dark tip and base, a faint cheek patch, and at least one long gray scapular. This seems like a quick change for two weeks, but perhaps it was an immature male all along that is now molting into its first alternate plumage. It would be good to note the bill, cheek and scapular colors/markings on future sightings. There has been more than one at the harbor mouth before.

Common Goldeneye Morro Bay

RoserComeau

Penny Principe and I birded the Morro Bay State Park Marina/Boardwalk this morning. While scoping the bay from the west end of the boardwalk, Penny found a male Common Goldeneye. We had nice views through the scope, but he was too distant for a photo. The continuing three Yellow-crowned Night-Herons were perched on the sterns of boats in the marina.  Thank you, Maggie Smith, for pointing them out.  A bald eagle flew directly overhead.
Ebird List:

Los Osos, CA

Bald Eagles, Peregrine Falcons, Audubon Lookout.

Tyson Baker

A pair of bald eagles perched across the bay and a pair of peregrine falcons hunting over the lookout.

2019 Arroyo Grande 5MR Results

Brad Schram

I've written some observations about my 2019 Five-mile Radius local birding, about 2500 words including a list of birds I expected to see contrasted with the list of birds I actually did see.  If you have insomnia and would like to receive a copy by return email, just let me know and I'll send you a Word document by email.

I was often alerted to the presence of local rarities by San Luis Obispo County birders, and I thank you all for sharing your information in a timely manner, and for your interest in my 5MR project.

Here's the Reader's Digest version summarizing my birding within five miles of the house last year:

·       Number of days birding in the 5MR:  194, probably averaging two and a half hours a day when birding;

·       Gallons of gasoline consumed in the 194 days: about two (I drove the 5MR in my Chevy Volt, averaging about 28 miles a day when birding away from Deer Canyon.  The Volt is nuclear-powered thanks to Diablo Canyon, with an effective electric range of 36 miles.);

·       Number of species seen: 224 (I set par at 221 in January 2019);

·       Number of target list species missed:  19;

·       Number of species seen not on the target list:  22;

·       Number of species represented by only one individual seen:  34;

·       Number of species reported by others within the 5MR but missed: 4 (Red-necked Grebe, Franklin’s Gull, Black-legged Kittiwake, and Nashville Warbler);

·       Number of species heard only: 1 (Western Screech Owl).

Great Egret - injured 12.30.19

Cheryl Lish

A Great Egret just landed in the field behind my house, about 40 ft from me. As I looked up it was likely downing a lizard.
There’s something hanging from its throat but appears to be sticking out through the skin just under its bill. I couldn’t confirm the object as plant or animal. It was a few inches long, sort of orange and yellow.
The feathers in that area and lower down on the front of its neck are in poor condition. Many are missing.
The bird is flight capable and is still able to eat.
I had to encourage it to leave when it headed for my house, likely for more lizards.
There was a Great Egret next to my house a few days ago that flew when I stepped out the back door.
New yard bird.

Pismo Black Scoter

Brad Schram

An adult female BLACK SCOTER in a small flock of SURF SCOTERS just outside the surf zone off the Pismo Creek outfall this morning was a welcome surprise.  She actively preened with the loafing scoters before something spooked them, the whole flock flying past Pismo pier toward the Shell Beach cliffs.
