Magnolia Warbler

Thomas Slater

The magnolia warbler was refound again this morning (first seen on 11-1) in my backyard, so I guess it's hanging around the neighborhood. This time I got pre-dawn photos (ID photos mind you).

The Ferruginous hawks are still streaming in each night in decent numbers, but have recently taken a preference for the east side of the Eucs so after they fly in and perch, they're difficult to refind as they are buried in foliage. And if you don't see them fly in, you might miss them altogether.

Binoculars

Sharon Sutliff <sasutliff@...>

Thanks so much to everyone who replied to my email seeking advice on binoculars for travel. You guys are great! I’ve decided to bring the ones I own already along with a harness as Claudia suggested. I should’ve considered the binocular issue much sooner. Since there are no local dealers and it’s really too late to order a pair with enough lead time to return if it was necessary, I think it’s the path of least difficulty. I am keeping your recommendations for the future however. Thanks again!

Sharon Sutliff

Binoculars

Sharon:

I just bought 3 Vortex Diamondback, 8X42 roof prism binoculars.  I bought 2 for a fundraiser.  When I saw what high quality they were, I bought a third pair to keep in my truck for incidental birding.  They were less than $200.  My primary binocs are Leica.  These Vortex binocs might be just what you are looking for.

- Comments: "Seen circling overhead with a Turkey Vulture, the relative size and somewhat broad wing shape identified it as a Red-tailed Hawk, but the striking dark contrast of the wing linings, black trailing edge to the wings, and a light tail with an indistinct terminal band caught my attention. Referring to the photographs, a white-streaked chest contrasted with the otherwise black lower body and wing linings, flight feathers were noticeably banded, tail was mostly white with a smudgy band and some brownish color in the central rectrices, and the head and nape were a mottled grayish color. Not certain of the bird's age from the low-quality images, but the pattern on the primaries and secondaries appeared to be rather uniform, possibly indicating an adult. The bird hovered briefly then continued circling downwind over a ridge to the southeast."

Ferruginous roosting in large numbers

Thomas Slater

I went out to photo document the 6 roosting Ferruginous hawks in front of my house and the number grew to at least 10.
They just kept streaming in. I don't know if this is a record but it seems nuts to me! There were 3 dark and 7 light.
If anyone wants to watch the show, it takes place between 4:30-5:15pm at sunset/dusk.

Bird on,

Harlan's Red-Tailed Hawk at Turri Rd.

Jay Carroll

Early this afternoon I photographed a Red-tailed Hawk off Turri Rd. that appears to be a good candidate for the dark-morph Harlan's subspecies. It had very dark wing linings and black trailing edge to the wings, and a mostly whitish tail with a smudgy terminal band. Red-tails of course are notoriously variable, and I would appreciate any feedback on the i.d. The bird circled briefly, hovered, then continued downwind to southeast in the direction of Los Osos Valley. Checklist with heavily cropped images at https://ebird.org/checklist/S61212846.

Also, registration for the Morro Bay CBC (12/14) is now open, so please sign up online before the end of this month if you intend to participate. Thanks!

Binos for travel

Sharon Sutliff <sasutliff@...>

Hello all,

Does anyone have a suggestion for a good pair of lightweight binoculars for travel? My current pair are Eagle Optics 8x42 which are somewhat bulky for international travel--even these don’t magnify as much as I’d like for definitive ID’s (I know, I know, I need a scope). I understand the downside of lighter ones with regard to reduced field of view, etc. I’m going to Australia and Fiji and will be birding as much as possible considering the tour isn’t specifically for that but also hope to get good looks at ground dwelling creatures.

Thanks,

Sharon Sutliff

Bald Eagle

Paula Adrian

I was delighted to see at least one of our bald eagles is back in Los Osos. I spotted him yesterday at 11:30 and again at 3:00 in the large pine tree between 4th and 5th just east of Santa Ysabel. (close to Audubon overlook)

Cruise Ship Pelagics, 11/3

Tom Edell

The southbound cruise ship Star Princess passed through county waters between 2:27 and 4:40 PM on Sunday Nov 3. It was about 55 miles offshore and fairly slow bird wise with the highlight species being Black-footed Albatross and Buller’s Shearwater. The most unusual species were a couple European Starlings that spent a short time on the ship before departing and a Myrtle type Audubon’s Warbler. Hardly worth reporting, but there it is…

Well, that didn’t take long!  After mentioning in my post last night that I still hadn’t seen a White-throated Sparrow in our yard this fall, I got up this morning and spotted an adult tan-striped morph in the backyard at around 10:00 a.m.  We typically have anywhere from 1-5 White-throated Sparrows wintering in our yard each year, hanging out with the much more common Golden-crowned and White-crowned sparrows. Of the three wintering Zonotrichia species in the yard, the White-throated is typically the last to arrive in fall, and the last to depart in spring (usually lasting until the beginning of May).  Unlike the other two species, I don’t often hear the White-throated Sparrows singing much on their winter territories, but that changes in March-April, when they typically become pretty vocal.

Pine Siskins in Atascadero

Kevin Zimmer

I’ve been home less than a week after nearly a month Down Under, so this post may be “old news”.  However, as of today, we had at least 8 Pine Siskins attending our feeders, which are the first of the fall at our place.  Last winter we had none, following on the heels of a major Pine Siskin irruption the year before.

No signs here of the Red-breasted Nuthatch irruption that was so obvious in coastal parts of the county back in September, nor have we yet had any White-throated Sparrows turn up in the still growing Zonotrichia flock in the back yard.

Also, following up on Brad Schram’s post from earlier today:  I spent an hour on our deck late this afternoon, and was interested to note a passage of several straggling flocks of high-flying American Robins between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.  I would estimate 150-200 birds total, mostly in groups of 5-20, and all coming from the north and headed due south.  This is what I would expect from southbound migrants, but is quite different from what I’ve witnessed in some previous winters, when daily late afternoon movements of robins (and, during one notable year, Varied Thrushes) came from the east (where the birds may have been feeding in vineyards), flew at low altitude over our property, and disappeared into the hills to our west, presumably to evening roosts.  During my hour of observation today, I also noted 2 small flocks of Cedar Waxwings (6 and 9 birds respectively), but, unlike the robins, they were flying west, into the Coast Range.

Robin Flocks In Dawn Flight

Brad Schram

During these cool, clear fall mornings with modest easterly breezes the past week I've been monitoring movement over Deer Canyon from about 20 minutes before sunrise until about 9AM.  AMERICAN ROBINS have been repositioning northward after their nocturnal flight in decent numbers each morning, numbering between 125 & 332 each of the past four mornings.  This morning the movement was heavier with 152 before sunrise, 552 by 8AM with few thereafter.  The largest flock contained 147 robins, with CEDAR WAXWINGS and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS mixed in.

Cedar Waxwing numbers have been modest, with only a few discrete flocks daily; waxwings in the robin flocks are hard to focus on while counting the numerically superior robins.  I don't think I've seen as many as 100 waxwings any morning this week.  Yellow-rump numbers are moderate, many birds flying northward alone, occasionally in flocks of 5 or 6 and frequently a few random yellow-rumps within a robin flock, between 20-50 each day.  Finch numbers have been low.

Complicating the picture each morning are a few robins, waxwings, and warblers moving southward in contrast to their conspecifics in much larger flocks.

There has been little obvious raptor movement here this fall, the usual migrant species seen in small numbers, with no predictable daily movement, even when weather conditions seem optimal. Hummingbird numbers have been low by historic standards.

Notable migrants in October included a LEWIS'S WOODPECKER, a COMMON POORWILL, and a VARIED THRUSH, the latter in a robin flock close at hand a few days ago.

Re: San Simeon Creek lagoon

I’d say it’s a sculpin.  I’m not an expert though.

Greetings,

The beach lagoon of San Simeon Creek has been a draw recently.  Yesterday there was a good mix of ducks (for this TOY and given our decline in numbers…) with about 28 Bufflehead, 2 Lesser Scaup, and single birds including Hooded Merganser, Red-breasted Merganser, Northern Pintail (in totally embarrassing plumage—oh my!), and Ruddy Duck.  There was active fishing, and I photographed 4 immediately- successful piscivorous species.  A highlight was a determined Osprey that was at least 0-20 before finding success with a small catch that hardly netted calories.  As I sat still on the beach from 8-10:00 o'clock it repeatedly circled, hovered, then hit the water with a drop from maybe 30 feet, often staying below for 1-2 seconds, completely submerged.  The single catch I witnessed (from one of maybe 10 attacks perhaps 20 feet off shore from me—almost got splashed!) turned out to be a small bottom-dwelling fish (please weigh in fish experts to refute or amplify).  Was this Osprey bottom fishing??!
